Need to pick your brains please.
I have had a good look but not found a comprehensive answer. I not great online so I'm sure it's here.

What are the physical differences between the E3 and E4 engines?
Are parts interchangeable between them.
Can you get good power and reliability from both engines?

The reason i ask is i have an E4 with a ruined head and turbo. Not sure why it went as I bought it this way, but it has had the duplex done so I would like to rebuild, but want to get it right.

Any advice would be welcome as to why the head died. The valve seats are distorted

Euro 3 and Euro 4 engines are basically the same with the same main components, they are mapped different and some components under the bonnet are slightly different or upgraded.

Euro 3 has silver rocker cover, Euro 4 is black, the EGR's on the two are different. Euro 3 is more economical mainly because of mapping. Euro 4 autos were the first to have a DPF which doesn't help fuel economy.

Both engines can give extremely good power if set up properly.

There are other differences, i can't remember them all but, they are basically the same engine.

As for your current engine's demise, it could be any number of things but, the fact you say it has the duplex chain fitted makes me wonder.

Some cheap chains don't last very long at all, maybe it has stretched, or broken, or wasn't fitted correctly? Any of these could drastically knock the timing out, hence the valve damage?

I guess you'll have more idea if you started stripping it down

Possibly killed the head from overheat. Might have removed the viscous fan and then not left the aircon running, which runs the only electric fan, so overheated it.
Another possibility with a dead turbo is that the turbo was throwing engine oil straight through the engine until the engine grenaded, as switching off the keys does not stop a runaway :( Is the bottom end OK?

Too many factors to do a proper desktop diagnosis :)

The is play in the shaft of the turbo, but not insane. Valve seats are distorted the pistons look fine with no movement in them. No signs of oil in the bores. The car apparently overheated and that was that. The chains all look good.

Do I bang a new head turbo etc and have the injectors checked and hope or is the something more sinister??
The car has done 130 miles, but is mint in every way other than the top end..

Thanks for the responses. Great stuff.
