Hi everyone

I'm in the market for a D40 , having done my research I've been looking for a pre 56 reg with the euro 3 engine as the MpG is meant to be better but having looked through the average MPG thread I'm wondering is there really such a benefit...? If your only gaining maybe 5 mpg more??

The figures fluctuate so much on the thread I just wondered if anyone had made note of what your average euro 3 and euro 4 engines produced ? E.g bog standard set up no chunky tyres etc doing combined urban/town driving?

My reason for asking is there are plenty of post 56 navs out there for sale but hardly and 55 , 06's ! Maybe I'm just being too impatient..

I look forward to your response,

Cheers,
Scott

My 2006 euro3 manual would average around 33mpg for pottering around locally. On a run I could get 35-39mpg depending in how much of a hurry I was in.

My V6 I get around 28mpg pottering around and mid 30's on a run, again depending on how much of a hurry I am in.

Both bog standard.

The other thing to remember is that euro3 trucks also suffered from soft half shafts (that leak and are expensive to fix) so unless you know you are buying one that has had that problem properly sorted then you could cost yourself more in getting that fixed than you would in the less mpg from a euro4.

Apart from a Navara with certain issues, the Euro 4 auto is the thirstiest.

Another thing to take into account is, all vehicles are different, and what you see posted here regarding fuel economy has lots of variables.

The Euro 3, and later 190 Euro 4's are the best generally for fuel economy, and the 171 and 169 Euro 4's are usually the worst.

As Ken says though, Euro 3 Navs had certain issues, halfshafts and clutches were a problem for some.

If you're really concerned about fuel consumption, buying a 2.25 tonne truck might not be a good decision

.

39 is a lot more than I thought possible from such a big truck!

I read about the half shafts on here and people seem to renew the whole rear axle set up, good point though there's quite a bit to weigh up when thinking about what to go for!

I completely agree, this was the point I made with the wife..if I'm going to buy a thirsty truck then what's a few more MPG less when it's already a drop on what I drive anyway lol

Best of luck there then. Convincing women using logic never did work in my experience. There are some exceptions I am sure (just in case you read this Jay).

I have a standard manual 190 Euro 4, and my worst mpg has been 30, and my best 36. My daily drive is 65% B roads, and 35% motorway. I reckon if I did a long motorway journey, it would return almost 40 mpg.
The [s:q125v08m]C A R[/s:q125v08m] Truck( and I do call it a [s:q125v08m]C A R[/s:q125v08m] Truck  ), has pretty much all the toys you could want, is extrememely comfortable, and surprisingly rapid.
Previously I had 3 Mitsi's which returned 24 mpg at best, and all committed suicide at about 130,000 miles.
Other than it would cost less, I can't see any real advantage in buying a Euro 3.

i am sorry but consumption does matter when you go after any car or truck, 20mpg to 30+ is a huge differance none saint wants to pay if you can avoid like now!
my advice is keep away from euro4, why get 20 mpg when you can get 30+ from the same truck with bigger engine! every little counts, unless you have a billion euros in Sweden ;)

hi
i had the same train of thought as you, and purposely went for the euro 3, as i wanted an auto as well, thought it would be the best option...
i got an 06 plate adventura, which i can confirm is very disappointing at 20 mpg (although i drive it not worried about mpg).
regarding mpg i think you just get good ones and bad ones, and no doubt a few mods/remap ect... will help, along with driving style,
even tyres, I've lost 30 miles to a tank going from standard wranglers to general grabbers recently...

my advise for what its worth would be to stretch for the later facelift euro4s, better mpg? and with upgraded interior etc... thats what i wish i did as I've spent more than that on mine so far :eyeroll

but i'll have a solid tool when I've finished with it!
and i love it :awesomework

anyway, good luck with it

Thanks Lee, budget is a little tight wanted to spend 6k max so I've kinda cut my self out the aventura market unfortunately ( with sensible mileage on the clock anyway)

Don't forget the cheaper road tax that the 56 plate qualifies for.
Does the cheaper tax apply to 55,06,56? Or purely just the 56? How much cheaper is it?

mines a 56 and tax is ÂŁ140 for the year.

Quite a bit cheaper!
