Hi all I noticed a few weeks ago that the engine was making a throbbing pulsing noise when revved, at first I thought it was just a belt - I changed them and it's not - I revved her up last night and put a brick on the peddle to keep the revs constant - not too heavy about 2500 revs and the engine although sounding solid has a definite throbbing noise, I noticed yesd that there's a rod going up to the middle of the turbo that seems to pulse at the same time as the noise - any ideas please

This could be related to the cutting out when first reversing in the morning.

The engine is pulsing as it is responding to inputs from various sensors. Obviously if the flywheel is slopping about or the timing chain is slack it will cause this very effect.

The arm you see moving is just the vacuum operated boost control and it is supposed to move.

It might be worth checking the wee vacuum hoses that for leaks including loose or split ends.

Have you reads the fault codes?

Sounds like it's struggling to stabilize boost pressure.

It's really odd while it's making this noise the revs aren't hunting ( if that's the right terminology ) no fault codes at all - timing chain was only done late last year

The chain is just one possibility.

It can cause similar symptoms if it is stretched by giving a skew signal between the crankshaft sensor and the camshaft sensor.

As I said before, a tired dual mass flywheel can cause an unbalanced signal to the crankshaft sensor, this would be most noticeable when changing gear or taking up drive.

Again, do the simple stuff first, look at the vacuum hoses for the turbo and possibly do this lot before spending too much too soon; viewtopic.php?f=14&t=103010

Wow don't thinks the duel mass flywheel well I hope not - think maybe one of the sensors has gone or maybe a chain tensioner either way she'll have to go back but before I send her I'll try resetting the ecu for old times sake - thanks for your responses I'll keep you posted

well its not the duel mass flywheel - thwaites had it for a day and couldnt find anything a miss, a diesel specialist had it monday and found it needed a new filter and a new suction control valve, so far 500 quid down and still got this noise, its starting to really worry me to the point im scared to drive it, bill car say they will strip your engine to find a fault for 150 quid and waive that if a problem found is fixed by them, so i may drive her up there and get them to do that

Well there it is, took the car to Billcar in Shrewsbury met a really nice guy called Dave who owns it i think, he took the nasty streached bluepoint single chain set off and put in his duplex set - I was worried about my pick up having never used Billcar before but optimistic because of all the good comments about Billcar I've read on here, suffice to say when i went to pick her up she was perfect, Dave showed me the streached single chain against the new duplex chain (oh dear ) He let me drive around for half hour or so on a test drive but i could tell she was great, more responsive more power and no more smoke - I should have taken her there from the off and listened to you guys, Dave knows these engines inside out and was so helpful - ain few months time I'll be taking her back for a new clutch and a full set of brakes along with a remap - sure its a long way from Brighton up to shrewsbury but when you get a company like Billcar looking after your pick up - its absolutely worth it --- if your reading this Dave she never missed a beat on the way home - your a star cheers see ya soon
