Hi all after tons of thought on buying new pickup i have madly decided to blow a £15,000 bugdet on a complete rebuild , yes i am not all there before any of you try and remind me.
So am activley looking for ideally a chasis or completly knackered nav although needs to be sound body.
Also looking into what other lump and geabox combos might fit as well so any ideas would be welcome as i have 8 months to complete.
All 4 now

sounds like this could be an interesting project, as for engine and gearbox, i'm toying with the idea of putting a yank v8 with auto box in mine

As you dig deeper it seems more daunting but i know there is talent on hand here ,the mechanical side of things is all ok but the electrics worry me i.e air bag and ecu if i put a different engine and gearbox how does it all tie togather , looks like my obsesion has just started lol

doing an engine conversion isnt going to be an easy job to do, mainly i think is due to the ecu which seems to control everything. i could just sell the truck and buy a yank pickup, but i like the idea of having something completely different and a D40 with a big V8 in sounds ideal to me. just need to understand how i can modify the ecu

Suppose it depends on what is being kept ie as mentioned earlier possibly keep the existing ecu for airbags and body control module to do its thing but back in the day engine management for the engine was not needed so gues it comes down to how raw you do your build something i am looking at the moment.Agreed about the yank truck thing
a different d40 is my cup off tee

i have just posted this on one of rich spannermans threads but i will put it up here as well

A friend of mine swapped his 2.8 petrol for a 3.0 turbo diesel in his g wagen (also swapped gear box and clutch) and now its silly fast. i was tossing ideas in the air for doing something similar. Mechanical fuel pump so you can just turn it up, combined with a big turbo. A guy in Doncaster is a wizard for doing the conversion. this g wagens now pushing around 350 hp

i don't know if you would fit a v8 under our bonnets. Everything would need importing which would be a big head ache in its self

after 10 mins of searching i have found his channel

I reckon it's very hard unless you strip off lots of functionality....

Maybe you start off with a vehicle old enough to escape some regulations, particularly emissions stuff.... If you turn up for MOT with say a Nav with a US V8 in it, but which originally had DPF fitted (against the vehicle VIN), for sake of argument, what do they test for, is lack of DPF then a failure? Many other things to consider.

Not saying it's a problem; I don't know how it would work in practise. What about insuring it too?

I'm not big headaches, so if it were my £15K, I'd look for US used truck, or maybe see if good V6 Navs were coming into that price bracket....

Enough smoke to hide a small town by itself! I can see a Saudi prince rubbing his hands with glee when it fills with fuel...
Not much seems to have been done to make it stable or handle well; I assume the brakes are properly uprated though.
But if that's your thing, I'm glad you're happy!

My mates g wagen kicks out no more smoke than my nav, really not much at all. The guy with the f250 runs his rich. Lack of dpf doesn't matter, you just have to pick your mot man. Trucks are meant for being a work horse not Sunday track days. Mine handles like a boat, the body rolls hilarious.

According to the diesel pump website you can get 400 + hp and 40 mpg Running these merc engines. It might pay for itself if you owned it long enough. I wouldn't be able to keep my foot out of it tho. :D

Loads of ideas thanks at the moment still looking for a donor bodyshell in good nick will be starting in Jan hoping to finish by august even thought about looking for a wrecked titan and transplanting all bits but import tax is a joke, g wagon sounds interesting lots of avenues to go down yet

Only problem is they are old. There are great engines, I bet some have done a million miles. But if were doing a project build from scratch I would strongly consider a complete rebuild. You will struggle to find one below 100,000. It could be so sick. :bounce:

If you are going down the V8 route (Titan, LS1 etc) the route would be to buy an aftermarket ECU to run your engine, likewise if going automatic you would get an aftermarket ECU for that too. Something like Emerald or maybe Megasquirt for the engine and Compushift for the gearbox.

The original ECU would stay in place to keep the rest of the car happy.

Thanks for the sound advise very usefull , the two ideas i have is your one and secondly making the build a bit more mechanical than ecu orientated, appreciate the imput
