My 56 plate has started to develop a bit noisy in all gears apart from 5th. My guess is some kind of layshaft bearing.

Anybody had this before?

Do I ignore it until it gets worse?

Oil level was a bit low, now topped up. Will try a additive first.

Thats a bigger, Is it louder more noticeable in 1st gear?

I meant to say bugger?

I had the input shaft/ lay shaft bearing fail on one of my old Terrano's
Hard at explain the noise, its like a shaifing sound.

Before you stick additive in, drop all the oil out, you can save it.
Check the colour, and inspect the magnet g/box sump plug for metal filings.
Can you feel the noise through the gearstick?

It seems from some googling around that there are case hardening issues on the input shaft that have been reported elsewhere. So if anybody else is having their D40 growling in all gears but 5th, therin lies your problem.
Now just need to get it fixed, I might go down the s/h gearbox route.
