Re: Tachographs!!!!!

I did it with The Trailer Man in York. Used his 2 door freelander and twin axle, 1.5T box trailer. I'd wholly recommend doing that as it was recognised by the test centre which puts you off to a good start. While I was doing my test someone turned up with a Hilux and trailer and were refused as their outfit was not suitable. You need to have mirrors for the examiner and the trailer has to be within certain specifications which are quite strict.

I did a day with the instructor the day before the test as well as instruction on 'how to pass the test' This was great as we discussed exactly what they were looking for and what bad habits I shouldn't do even though in real life they are necessary!!!

Can give you details of the guy I used if you want them, gotta say he was spot on!!

Re: Tachographs!!!!!

Cheers for the info mate as for york its a bit of a mission for me.I understand you have to have some lessons before you take the test is that correct?is the test done at a hgv training centre?as there is one in sailsbury.Sorry for the question just want to hear from people who have sat the test

Re: Tachographs!!!!!

Just registering my interest as I really do need to sit my test as well...Although I am old enough to have a pre 1997 license, thanks to a mistake by the DVLA it now looks like my license was from 2001 without B+E....It is really hard work getting it changed even though I had photo copies....The Netherlands don't issue me proof as you need to renew every 5 years but only do that when you live in Holland which I don't...Bugger...

I'm talking to a HGV place in Leighton Buzzard...

I would want to use my own truck, but their trailer....My boat is a bit cumbersome to learn it with ;-)
Ye your not wrong about the boat lol I think its ÂŁ110.00 for the test wich isnt to bad but all you do is drive around with the trailer then unhitch then hitch back up again. You dont even nedd to reverse it around a corner! madness.I would hope you dont have to drive like your learning to drive as you have already proven you can do that!

Re: Tachographs!!!!!

They are very strict on the trailer specs, must be of certain width and height etc.

You also have to reverse in an S, dead easy and it's dimensions should be in relation to the outfits overall length, mine wasn't altered from a 17 tonner that did the test before me though so be careful not to put yourself at a disadvantage with a long overall length and something with the turning circle of the Nav.

It is all done in a HGV test centre, my test consisted of, in order;-
unhitch, pull along side of trailer
walk round trailer pointing out pre-hitching checks and exaggerating everything
get back in, hitch up (blind without banksman or reversing aids.)
Check lights with instructor
Perform the manouvre drive forward, reverse in an s to the left between the appropriate cones then stop no more than 1m away from the barrier in the marked bay.
let the instructor get back in
perform a controlled stop in the designated area
go out on to the roads and drive like a **** for an hour
get back, find out you've passed and got minors for 'undertaking' in traffic on the A1 when the other 2 lanes were stationary and the inside lane was moving slowly.

Hope that helps

Just separated them to clarify between tachos (business) and towing licenses.

When I first got my Nav I inquired about the towing legalities at a local caravan retailer, I was confidently told by the salesman that I could tow any single axle trailer on my current license (Cat B). Obviously a little more research revealed the bull but it's good for a bit of clarification away from the ridiculously confusing DVLA website.
