Hello all Navara gurus! Ow be you all?

I am a (hopefully) soon to be Navara owner and I'm after some advice if possible please.

I currently have my own little landscape gardening business in and around the Southwest (Devon/Cornwall) and have been using vans for the past few years. I currently have a Mercedes Vito that other than the typical rust issues is a great little van.

The reason I want a change is that now I have a trailer I find myself wanting to be able to tow more weight than my van can handle on a regular on going basis.

I have had a guy offer to swap his 4 door 05 Navara sport (I'm guessing this is the D22?) for my 04 Vito once I finish its respray. It has apparently had an engine recondition and it has 162,000 miles on it. My concerns are what are the major issues I should be looking out for when viewing it? And secondly (most importantly) do you Navara owners think I can haul my tools around in the back. I have strimmers, mowers, and hand tools that I need with me daily that will have to be under the snug top as I need them locked away and can't lock them in trailer as its open topped. I am just worried about the bed space on uk trucks.

I lived in America for 5 years and my mothers Nissan Titan is by far the best truck I've bombed around in, if the Navara's are anything like their big cousin I'm in for a treat!

Thanks for sticking with it all!

Josh

Hello & Welcome

I can't really help because all we know is, it's a 2005 which could be a D22 or an old D40. Maybe search on google and see which one you are buying?

About the hauling, both models will do the job just fine :cheers2:

As for the Nissan Titan, i've heard that the D40's chassis is the same of the Titan only shorter. The only trouble with this one is rust.

Compared to a van it is surprising how little you can into the back of a pickup. Where a double cab scores is that it useable as a car, has 4x4 and tows well.
The Navara sport is a D22, once the engine problem has been solved it is a good workhorse.
So yes, you will need to think about it hard!

hi Josh, :welcome

The main weakness of the D22 is the bottom end failing unless modified (properly). There are a lot of engine reconditioners that fix these engines only for them to fail shortly after (the crankshaft doesn't survive long after a regrind). You really need to know who did the recon and what methods and parts were used. The good news is if done right, the engine and the rest of the truck is pretty bullet proof.

The other issue you'll have is security of your tools. I believe the tailgate on the D22 doesn't lock and the tops don't have the best of locks on them. You might have to thing of hardening up the security for your equipment in the back.

You star! That's the kind of info that is invaluable to me!

Is there any specific way of adding extra security to the back. I think the beds are 58" long if I'm correct but my strimmer is 70" is there that much space inside a topper diagonally?

I will try and find out who did the recon

This is what he said

The problem is with the Nissan shells and bearings, the receipt states they were all acl parts fitted apart from a genuine crankshaft.. I've got the receipt in the truck so will send you a photo if you send me your email address. I have confirmed with them already that the work was carried out. I've had a couple of these trucks and this one is the quietest and most economical out of them al.

What do you guys think?

70 inches is a couple of inches off 6 ft, no chance that will fit.

Mind you, if your strimmer is that big I don't think I want to argue with you...
Awwww mate Comon I'm a softy! I'm only 6'3 18stone rugby lad. Yes my strimmer is only a couple of inches off 6ft as I got the long shaft big engined Sthil that can do medow clearances etc.

So my next question is can you fit a rear sliding window in truck so I can poke head of strimmer through?

Also what are they like for fuel economy? Is there a long truck bed version?

Sorry one more question.

Hi guys, sorry to keep bombarding you all with questions!

Can you lift up/fold down rear seats in said Navara to store some bits inside cab?

Lol if you can't tell my heart wants a Navara and my head is trying to find a way to tick the boxes! ??

The D22 does about 35mpg, better than some models.

The longer bed is available in the Kingcab version (smaller rear passenger area).

I flagged down a d22 owner at my local garden Center and they happily let me try the bed out for size. It does fit (just)

Sorry, missed that bit

He is almost right, it's not just the bearings but the big end bolts as well. so long as ACL ones were used all should be good. When you look at the truck check how long it takes for the oil pressure warning to go out after first starting (Ideally first start of the day). There is an O ring between the sump and oil pump that sometimes doesn't seal properly causing a loss of oil pressure (Billcar have a modified spigot to fix this).

Try to find out who did the work. Let us know to see if we have heard of them.
