Hi all
Just got a call about my car, the bloke said the injector pump has gorn.
2500$?$?$?$!?!!?!?!! why does a new one cost so much......
Ive been to the wreckers an got priced 700$ for a very good 2nd hand one. with 3month warranty.

i dont rly have the money for a new one.. is a 2nd hand one ok?? should i ask for a longer warranty??

ive been told ive had a mass on dirty fuel in my car?? does it need to be bled? does the tank need to be dropped and cleaned?
Clean fuel system completely or you could end up needing another pump :(

Where did you get fuel from any chance of compensation :?:

OK guys, Ive had them check the glow plugs before the fuel injector pump, an it seems they are clean an fine....
Wat does that mean??? how do i check them myself? are glow plugs just the diesel way of spark plugs?. im being charged 750$ fitted for a 2nd hand fuel injector pump. if the fuel injector pump has gorn, why didn't the injectors go first? or will i need to replace them soon? is it worth keeping the car? or doing a quike fix an selling it be worth wild before larger things happen?

what where the fault codes?

glowplugs are easy to test, just got to get a muilti meter or even a light bulb and see that power goes through each one. just have to unscrew the rail of them before testing.

fuel pump can fail. common problem is often the electronics, especially if airs been sucked into the fuel. the ECU on top of the pump over heats and can fail. the other main fault is dirty or poor diesel (ie petrol in the diesel) causes more wear on the timing actuator. then it can't maintain correct timing.

single biggest fuel related problem is air being sucked in, usually around the fuel filter and primer pump. its often dismissed as "normal". also blocked fuel filter causes similar problems leading to pump failure. some guys fit lift pumps. that way they leak fuel (which is easy to spot) rather than suck in air. also it gets around blocked filter problems.
usually faulty pumps will throw codes when faulty.

heard of a few guys who have new pumps fitted when in fact its been something else at fault. hence i would explore everything else first as its bloody expensive to replace these pumps.

if its burning oil you should be able to smell it and it would be using more oil than normal...

or a valve stem seal or a ring getting stuck but these are prob worse case hope this kinda helps

I dont think its anything to do with that mate as its kicking out white smoke aswell.Definetly something fuel related i reckon.

OK once again, Ive rang Nissan to just see Wat they say. such as.

will i need the fuel system bled? A: No u wont because air pockets will pass through the fuel filter bleed valve (dirty fuel will pass) and burn??
For starters Ive given up on Nissan dealers. my car was (WAS) service there every 5000k's. no more can i put up with this bullcrap from them. it seems its just money money money to them and not customer service...

im bringing my car home monday and doing the work myself.
fuel injector pump an glow plug checks. (as members recommended)

i have bought a muilti meter thnx to tweake's advice. and i will be checking my glow plugs asap.

I'm still not happy that a fuel injector pump is $2500 new and around $700 2nd hand.... how much do the new 09 Navaras pump cost?

i have my doubts that its fuel related, nor do i trust stealerships diagnostics. engine light comes on but no mention of codes :(
blowing blue smoke is certainly not fuel, tho white can be.
its just information is not complete, some big holes and a big leap to say its pump fault which could be an expensive mistake.

09 Navaras pump cost?
i don't know exactly. typically fuel rail is replaced as well for safety reasons. often the injectors go before a pump so more often than not the entire injection system is changed (injectors, rail, pump). cost of that i've been told is around $15,000 in aussie.

if you do change the pump yourself there is a few catches.
firstly do not run the pump with no fuel in it. borrow a fuel pump (faucet, holly, carter) and use it to push fuel through and get the air out.
you also need to match the pump to the ECU. there is a procedure but i'm not sure what it is. i've heard you simply plug it all in and turn the ignition on for 20 minutes. that allows the ecu to talk to the pump and recognize the pump. i'll have to see if i have any more info on it.
local guys normally send pump and ecu to the injection pump crowd that do the reco's. that way they can insure the pump matches the ecu.

If you are any way handy with the spanners you can check (in a very low tech way) if any of the pistons are shot.

Drain oil, leave sump bung out, remove injectors, pour diesel into each hole one at a time about 5 mins apart, watch for any coming out the bung.

use thin engine oil not diesel.
there is no way to clean the diesel out of the motor afterwards and that small amount of diesel can blow the bearings.

Diesel will be Ok, oil will be to slow to run thru, just turn motor over with injectors out a couplle of turns to clear diesel from cylinders, then put a little oil in to oil the washed bores, turn over again a couple of turns and let all drain from sump.
Oh,it will be a bit messy
There will be very little diesel in sump to do any harm :thumbright:
