ZD30 Engine stops just after startup

Help Please. The Zd30 engine in my D22 intermittantly stops just after startup. It sounds like it runs out of fuel. After pumping the priming pump and getting good fuel pressure back into the system, the engine will restart after a few seconds of cranking but runs rough for a few seconds as if still not getting enough fuel. Once running it then drives & run fine.

most likely sucking air in. common fault is leaks in the primer and fuel filter.
fit a bit of clear fuel line after the filter so you can see any bubbles.

the other rarer place is the injector return line. the seals on the injectors can leak causing air to be sucked in. but it can also leak fuel into the engine oil and turbo is usually the first thing to blow.
