poor throttle response

Evening guys!
I have a navara D40 Aventura, 2009 with 90,000 miles on the clock, 2 inch body raise with BF muddy's on, EGR and DPF delete.

Recently I have been having issues.......throttle response is strange, it feels like there is a 1 inch gap between foot off and then getting any power, this causes the truck to throttle on and off irrationally especially when in traffic crawling in 1st. Also on cold start up there is a strange rattle which lasts for a couple of before disappearing again, it seems to be at the back of the engine. I also need to replace the MAP sensor as it throws a fault now and again, but I was thinking about cleaning it with electrical contact cleaner, similar to the MAF, anyone tried this? Nissan want the best part of £100 for a new sensor. Any help and comments would be great, thanks in advance!!

There may well be a problem, but to be honest, the idea of "throttle response" for a turbo diesel in a heavy truck is misleading...
Throttle response for us is about 1 second, but for a decent petrol, non-turbo car it's more like 100ms at most!
You may well have a fuelling issue.

Whats the cold start up tick over like? is it even or surging to near stalling?

Hi diydave thanks for responding, there is a slight surge yes, but it's never stalled. It's a little tricky to explain but yes it's not a nice even tick over. Also when I press the throttle it Rev down response is really slow as well. It will hold the high Rev and release it slowly.

Hi Steve, thanks for responding......I mean that is seems that the signal doesn't get sent to the engine for what feels like about an inch when I press on the throttle.

I haven't looked, but is the throttle a modern potentiometer type? If so, you can get faults/dead areas in potentiometers....

Apart from your thoughts of the location of the noise, this sounds like a failed upper timing chain tensioner. (It's located at the top drivers side of the front of the engine). This could be serious and cause expensive engine damage. Your truck is right in the zone for a failing (stretched) lower timing chain and this could also be part of your running issues. It might be time to think of a complete timing chain kit preferably the Billcar duplex conversion. In the guide I've linked to is a direction to clean the MAF/MAP?airflow sensor, it's the same thing and well worth trying before splashing out on a new one.

It sounds familiar, is the tick over even when engine is warm?
Also if you free Rev the engine then immediately blip the throttle does the engine "miss" just for a second ?

Going by your description I do not think its the fly by wire pedal box that's the problem ..... So far
Just try the above and get back with your findings bud.

Thanks for your response guys!!

I took it to my Nissan dealer over the road from work and asked to speak to a navara specialist (Paul) he had a good listen and commented on how sweet my engine seemed........... Now the jumpy tick over (according to Paul) is the fuel solenoid! Apparently this is the beginning of the end for it, eventually it will stall at traffic lights and junctions so will need replacing when it gets that bad (£100 odd).
I need a new fan belt (knew that)
As for the rattle on start up, I need someone else to start it for me in the morning, then try and find out where it's coming from in the engine bay. He said it might be a wearing flywheel, which to be honest I'm ok with.........if it at the front of the engine then well.....we all know what that's likely to be!!

I'm gunna give all the contacts a good clean tomorrow so will hopefully help with a few issues.
Anyone cleaned the MAP before?

We agree that one if the running issues may be caused by the Scv (solenoid) but before you change it work your way through the guide I linked for you. In that guide is a link showing you how to clean the MAF.

As for the rattle, if it was the clutch/flywheel the noise would not go away once the oil pressure came up.

Hello,

the throttle closes with a delay which causes the engine to jerk. I have electric controls. I exchanged for another one. still the same problem. what could be the problem? closing is delayed 2 seconds after ignition is turned off.
