I've the usual problem with the 4WD warning light coming on & it not allowing you to get into 4wd.

But it's on about 80% of the time, the rest of the time it's off & everything works fine.

I've swapped all the sensors (twice), changed the oil, changed the relays, tried a different actuating unit on the transfer box, but still exactly the same.

Any suggestions what to do next?

Could it be a wiring issue as it's intermitent?

Cheers, Richard..

Thanks for the quick response.

I've gone through and visually checked all the wiring & it all looks good. Think I now need to get my meter out & start testing further.

Do you know if it's possible to identify where the individual wires run to so I can test each one for continuity end to end?

Richard..

The 4wd system has its own self diagnostic system
http://www.nissan-navara.net/47-how-guides-library/53177-how-perform-self-diagnostics.html

4WD / AWD - TRANSFER SELF-DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE (WITHOUT CONSULT-II) Description

If the engine starts when there is something wrong with the 4WD system, the 4WD warning lamp turns ON or J flickers in the combination meter.
When the system functions properly, the warning lamp turns ON when the ignition switch is turned to “ON”, and it turns OFF after engine starts.
To locate the cause of a problem, start the self-diagnosis function.
The 4WD warning lamp in the combination meter will indicate the problem area by flickering according to the self-diagnostic results.

(A/T models)
1. Warn up engine.
2. Move A/T selector lever to “P” position.
3. Turn 4WD shift switch to “2WD” position. M
4. Turn ignition switch “ON” and “OFF” at least twice, and then turn ignition switch “OFF”.
5. Turn 4WD shift switch to “AUTO” position.
6. Turn ignition switch “ON”. (Do not start engine.)
7. 4WD warning lamp ON.
8. Move A/T selector lever to “R” position.
9. Turn 4WD shift switch to “2WD”, “AUTO” and “2WD” in order.
10. Move A/T selector lever to “D” position.
11. Turn 4WD shift switch to “4H”, “AUTO” and “4H” in order.
12. Move A/T selector lever to “N” position.
13. Turn 4WD shift switch to “AUTO” position.
14. Move A/T selector lever to “P” position.
15. Read the flickering of 4WD warning lamp.

(M/T models)
1. Warn up engine.
2. Move M/T shift lever to neutral position.
3. Turn 4WD shift switch to “2WD” position.
8. Move M/T shift lever to reverse position.
9. Turn 4WD shift switch to “2WD”, “AUTO” and “2WD” in order.
10. Move M/T shift lever to neutral position.
11. Turn 4WD shift switch to “4H”, “AUTO” and “4H” in order.
12. Move M/T shift lever other than reverse and neutral positions.
13. Turn 4WD shift switch to “AUTO” position.
14. Move M/T shift lever to neutral position.
15. Read the flickering of 4WD warning lamp.

WARNING THIS WILL ERASE THE ERROR CODES WHEN THE IGNITION IS TURNED OFF!
The light comes on for 2.5 seconds blinks a number of times, with a 1 second pause between different codes. then repeats.
so _2 Seconds____— —____— — —___ is error 2 AND 3
If you get any codes I'll look them up for you

Any more help would be appreciated !!

I'm still struggling with this.
I've now checked the continuity in the wiring & plugs (as far back in the loom under the car as I can get).
I've also tried taking the switches out one at a time and manually pushing the plunger in as far as it will go then turning the ignition on just to make sure the plunger is being pushed in enough.
No of this has solved it.

I'm beginning to run out of ideas!

Rich..

Thanks Kael2001,

I'm Slightly confused about the "Auto" position on the 4WD shift switch. I just have 2wd, 4Hi & 4Low?
Sorry I'm a Pathfinder driver, forgot to put in the d40 translations for some things:

Diagnostic Procedure (A/T models)
1. Warm up engine.
2. Turn ignition switch “ON” and “OFF” at least twice, and then turn ignition switch “OFF”.
3. Move A/T selector lever to “P” position
4. Turn 4WD shift switch to “2WD” position.
5. Turn ignition switch “ON”. (Do not start engine.)
6. 4WD warning lamp ON.
7. Move A/T selector lever to “R” position.
8. Turn 4WD shift switch to “2WD”, “4H” and “2WD” in order.
9. Move A/T selector lever to “P” position.
10. Turn 4WD shift switch to “4H”, “2WD” and “4H” in order.
11. Move A/T selector lever to “N” position.
12. Turn 4WD shift switch to “2WD” position.
13. Move A/T selector lever to “P” position.
14. Read the flickering of 4WD warning lamp.

Diagnostic Procedure (M/T models)
1. Warm up engine.
2. Turn ignition switch “ON” and “OFF” at least twice, and then turn ignition switch “OFF”.
3. Move M/T shift lever to neutral position.
4. Turn 4WD shift switch to “2WD” position.
5. Turn ignition switch “ON”. (Do not start engine.)
6. 4WD warning lamp ON.
7. Move M/T shift lever to any position other than neutral.
8. Turn 4WD shift switch to “2WD”, “4H” and “2WD” in order.
9. Move M/T shift lever to neutral position.
10. Turn 4WD shift switch to “4H”, “2WD” and “4H” in order.
11. Move M/T shift lever to any position other than neutral.
12. Turn 4WD shift switch to “2WD” position.
13. Move M/T shift lever to neutral position.
14. Read the flickering of 4WD warning lamp.

Right then Kael2001, I've just done the Diagnostic process & I get:

1 long flash
10 quick flashes
13 quick flashes

Cheers,

Richard..
Error 10 is the wait detection switch: Improper signal from wait detection switch is input due to
open or short circuit.

Error 13 is the transfer control device: Malfunction is detected in transfer shut off relay 1 and transfer shut off relay 2.
Malfunction occurs in transfer control device drive circuit

I'd check or change the wait detection switch and see if that resolves the other error.

Thanks Kael2001,

Feel like I've already been here, having changed all the switches & oil once, but I'll try again. Am I right in thinking the Wait Detection Switch is the grey one on it's own at the back?

Having said that, I'll order them from Amayama this time, so I might as well get all 3 to be sure, I'll also change the oil again just to make sure any contamination has been flushed out.

Will let you know how it goes the the switches arrive!!!

The wait switch it shown in the pic below:

The other thing is to check all the fuses, fusible links and connectors shown above as well.

Right then, after a bit of a saga with the Royal Mail loosing my parcel, I've now replaced again all three switches & the Transfer box oil.

The 4WD warning light is still on, but the good news is that when I run the diagnostic sequence, I'm now only getting the Error 13, the Error 10 that I also previously had has gone.

I've checked and the fuses / relays and wiring as far as possible, so looking for any suggestions as to what to do next?

Thanks, Richard.
