Hello Steve

I put a deposit down on my 2008 Nav before signing up to the forum to discover the problem with Spanish built models.

I could have walked away at risk of losing my deposit, but on the basis it had only three owners, full Nissan service history, 70k miles on the clock with no obvious signs of a hard life and was absolutely immaculate inside and out, I decided to go ahead with the purchase provided that the garage selling it took it in to Nissan for a complimentary chassis inspection, which they did.

Mine was signed off as fine, with only 'age related' corrosion, but no cracks or holes. They basically stated it was to MOT standard.

Ultimately the inspection was visual only; no use of a borescope or tools to test the chassis' integrity.

Personally, I wouldn't pin your hopes too much on what Nissan will carry out as part of your inspection. On the basis I need my Nav to last, I took mine in to a company called Rust Buster who removed the truckman canopy and truck bed and fully treated and sealed my chassis. I also had some of Rich's stiffening plates welded on. As well as the full chassis treatment, they also injected waxoil into all cavities, pillars, doors and sills.

It didn't come cheap, but at the end of the day, I couldn't afford to lose my Nav or risk a 'market value' pay-out from Nissan. She needs to last me, hence why I had had the work done. Besides, I love my truck and although it might have been precautionary, when I saw the photographs of the chassis with the bed removed, it looked pretty bad (but was salvageable).

As Lookskyward1 has previously stated, there are some pinned threads about this very subject, one of which has some photos of my Nav's chassis being treated (before and after).

Are Nissan actually inspecting yours? I ask because they soon stopped after knowledge of this problem gained momentum. Instead, they are now sending out the RAC to inspect and report before Nissan decide upon the course of action.

I'm happy to send you a scanned copy of Nissan's report of the inspection carried out on mine if this is of interest.

This subject is dear to my heart, so let us know how you get on.

Cheers

Why do people keep saying the problem is with the Spanish model? The versions built in Thailand have never been available in Europe, nor have they have been delivered to a market where they put rock salt on the roads.

Which D40's sold in the UK were not Spanish built, and which model years are they?

All navaras regardless of where they were built have poor chassis protection
However it seams so bad on the uk models because we (the uk) have a much wetter climate with the addition of salt on the roads in winter which accelerates the rusting process

I don't know about that. In Belgium it's also wet and we use salt as well. I don't seem to find a lot of snapped chassis around.
True, however:

The UK spreads about 2million tonnes per year, Belgium about 10,000.

If you think Belgium is wet, try going to Ireland (where the problem first surfaced). Lovely country, but it is permanantly damp!

Hi SteveObourne,

I had the Nissan check last week... it come back as "its fine". No further information was provided. I asked for a report, some paperwork etc...but nothing. So I said I'd follow up with Nissan Customer Services. TBH - I'm not confident in what they have done, or if they checked inside. I reckon they just jet washed and eyeballed from the outside (not 100% certain). So, i'm getting a camera inside myself to check and to be sure before I do any strengthening or rust proofing on it.

Did anyone else get any reports or paperwork after their checks (mine was a free complimentary check after contacting NCS)?

Cheers,
Zin.
