Not meaning to repeat previous threads or anything, but over the last couple of years on here I have read very varied opinions on here whether to keep the standard box or to fit a (for example) K&N Apollo Induction kit.

I am going to fit the Safari Snorkel I got last month and I am wondering whether to wait and fit the lot with the K&N induction or just get a K&N panel filter.

I have read some people don't like the noise of the induction, or the oil comes off the cone onto the MAF sensor, so is it a pointless modification?

If anyone can put there opinions on here whether you think it's worth it to upgrade?

I am also going to upgrade the Air intake pipe from the turbo to the box with the below ForeFront upgrade pipe and fit the snorkel, so just after some opinions please on what is good to put in the middle? :)

I am also interested in peoples thoughts on this as I am about to purchase a Safari snorkel also. I love the induction noise / turbo whistling but have been paranoid about dust and dirt getting down the snorkel and through a filter like the K&N as I understand them to have a larger mesh pattern that can let more in.

Running a snorkel with a kn panel filter. No issues, and I love the sound. The OAT on the dash says -3. Intake air temp also says -3. Bliss. Ultimate CAI.

dont like k and n but each to their own, only bit of advice with the snorkel is make sure the airbox is sealed there are a few leaky joints which normally isnt an issue as they are before the filter but if you decide to hit the wet stuff and its still leaky its usually bye bye engine, i opened mine up at the joints and siliconed all the joints before reassembling it, you will get a connection pipe with the snorkel anyway measure 20 times cut once, it was already fitted to the Nav (badly) but i have done them before on others and its a twitchy moment lol

Yeah I have heard about sealing the standard box properly if keeping it to go in water.

If I get the Apollo kit I will be sealing it all up with tiger seal and T-Bolt Clamps, scrapping the standard jubilee clips.

This way no water can get in anywhere.

Hi mate, where does it tell you the intake air temp? Or do you have an additional sensor fitted for this?

Think its an after market thing. I have one called UltraGauge, awesome little device.

Do you know where you got it from matey?

Can't find one on iterweb lol

Thanks guys, getting one of these little bad boys ! :)

Getting back on topic, if I do get the Apollo induction kit and tiger seal it all into the snorkel.

Can you see any water issues if I go green laneing or through any fords that might come from the air intake / filter etc?

Also, does anyone know what this is for off the air intake pipe and can I get rid of it?

Looks like the induction kit is a sealed unit? If so then all you're really doing is replacing the stock airbox with panel filter for a different shaped one with a K+N filter? Providing you seal up the various joints as you would have done with the stock box then I can't see a difference?

The principle is the same - the only route for air (or water) to get into the system you want to be the top of the snorkel.

Thanks Neil :)

Just going to use a lot of tiger seal :wink2:

Just need to know what the box is in the above pic and can it go?

Its just an empty sealed bow that pushes into the intake pipe, I have no idea what its for or if it can be removed?

Doesn't seem to be on the euro 4 upwards.

Yes, I have torque on an old blackberry Z10. It permanently mounted on the dash and I have a WLAN OBD adapter. It fires up when the car starts.

I toyed with the idea of the Apollo but it looks small and big airboxes are better than small ones. So I went with a panel filter and and a snorkel.

I wouldn't remove the blank box. There where similar items on the RX8. Some people that removed them reported slow pickup. But the general consensus is its there for shock absorbency. There are shockwave that travel back out the intake. These hollow boxed absorb the shockwave and sort of store it, and help dampen the effects. You'll understand when you here the racket the snorkel make. Intake tuning is pretty complicated.
