Hi guys, another little thing I need cleared up...

D40 Aventura auto, 150k 07plate
(Does have the front brake solenoid problem)
When driving at low speeds, pressing and letting off the accelerator pedal there is quite a noticeable boost dump / turbo chatter.... Is this normal?

Thanks

Well from what I've read, seems to be quite common problem. In the automatic transmission control module there is a problem with either solenoid or part of the chip has broke and needs soldering.
So I pull away all Is fine and then once I brake or there is abit of bad road it puts the gearbox into limp mode (4th gear)

Can be common on these after some basic modifications have been made, such as snorkel, air filter and exhaust mods. Do you have any mods or is it totally stock?
Its hard for me to directly compare as I have the v6 but totally standard you can make it flutter quite faintly. Soon as you change to performance filter or add a snorkel its much more noticeable with a more aggressive driving style.

Any chance you can get a video and upload it?

Its not an entirely good thing although some people do like the sound. When your engine is under load, the engine is consuming air and your turbo is creating pressure (boost). Close the throttle however (as in when you would change gear or decelerate quickly), and the pressure maintains due to the momentum of the turbine wheel spinning incredibly fast, however the airflow has stopped because the throttle is closed. This situation forces the ‘intersection’ of pressure and airflow across the surge line as the pressure momentarily peaks and airflow virtually stops, forcing the turbocharger into compressor surge.

That fluttering noise is the sound of a turbo operating in compressor surge, as the compressor “chops” through the air rather than pushing the air into the engine. Whether you love the noise or not, it’s generally doing nothing good for your turbo performance or reliability.

There are a few things that can be looked at. I am assuming you don't have any error codes or an engine management light on?
Check your boost hoses, make sure there are no leaks or blockages in them all.
Check the EGR valve, make sure its not partially stuck (not enough to generate a code but enough to cause airflow disruption by being out of expected position).
Check what boost pressure you are maxing out at.
Check around the inlet manifold for any oil leakage.

As you mentioned if its had some air filter mod then it will become apparent. however there will be no damaged caused what so ever!
it is a much debated subject on forums about the noise. Its Perfectly fine I own a 320bhp focus st that's fitted with all sorts of mods and a large group A rally spec filter and mine chatters all the time and has done since for the past 6 years I've had it. No damaged caused. All turbos make the noise some you hear more than others.
However there's a difference if its stupidly loud then check all the vac pipes.

Yeah i know all about waste gate chatter and it has no mods, and like I say it sounds normal if it was any modded/remapped motor, just not sure if Navaras should/do it.
Also doesn't sound like a boost leak, but will check all pipes tomorrow, does anyone have a pic of all the pipes I should be checking?
I know abit about cars but not engine parts, although I know what a turbo looks like just easier looking at a pic and saying there it is. I'm a visual learner ;-)
I'll try and get a video tomorrow, hopefully can be heard enough.

Is no one going to mention the fact that diesels are throttled using fuel only and don't actually have a throttle plate (Butterfly) at all??? Hence they don't need a BOV...

When you lift off the go-pedal there is no throttle plate that closes which would cause a pressure build up between turbo and intake. The engine is still pumping air so the turbo can spool down on it's own without issue. Swallington has explained things very nicely when it comes to a petrol turbo application but for diesel there isn't really any relevance.

The being said this does seem like quite a mysterious problem.

Oh boy... So what else could make that chatter? I have this afternoon got rid of the very annoying rattle from the intake of the airbox. The pipes are very poorly made and in two bits, so had to use two zip ties to pull each side tight together, also pulled out the one of the bits connected to the second intake as it looked like it had been snapped off of somewhere on the arch. Didn't get to use it today to try and get a video so will try tomorrow if I can.
