Ok long story but looking for some advice...

Driving the D40 AUTO in 2 wheel drive that I recently bought and at 40mph I get vibration through the steering wheel. Anyway had the wheels balanced and drove home in traffic. After finding another stretch to get up to speed the same thing happened.

Anyway stopped and checked wheels and then thought wonder if it happens in 4H. Get up to speed and it seems to have stopped only showing up slightly at 60mph. Anyway come to the end of the road and reverse it round a corner for it to scrabble and jolt backwards. Stopped and tried again. Now thinking this is rather odd. Anyway take it out of 4H and go back to 2 wheel drive and move off forwards for the vibration to still be there at any speed over 40mph.

Anyway reverse it onto the drive and the jolting backwards has now stopped???

Can anyone please help me out as this has blagged my head all weekend and I even changed the wheels and the same thing happend!

Thanks Hughsie

OK I now know what the jerking is in 4wheel drive....its loading it up on the tarmac! So point never to use on tarmac and keep steering to a minimum if ever used anywehre again!

Now to test the torque converter....road test!

Ok switching the O/D on and off makes no difference at all.

Anyway put it on some gravel and changed to 4WD and it seemed to improve. Stopped again on gravel and put it into 2WD and as we left the gravel gave it a little stick so the rear wheels spun up. On the road the vibration now seemed to be less???

Checked the UJ and and the front seems to have more play than the back. How much play should they have?

This is really bugging me please can anyone help???

I would remove the front prop shaft (marking the flanges to re-fit in the same position if the test is in-conclusive) and drive her in 2wd.
If the vibration is eliminated then the prop's balance/UJ's are gone :(

Dont think there is a "how to" , I was going to try and do mine myself but couldn't get all the bolts undone to get it off! Pretty tight to get at and can only really get at them with a ring spanner and if the bolt turns the only thing you can hold it with is an open end spanner. Agricultural mechanic mate of mine did it for me, he had to heat them a bit and he said they were VERY tight!!
My rear prop is squeaking again and I got a couple of joints from Milners today, going to give it a bash myself on Friday, rear bolts look easier to get at with a socket.
Good luck with yours.

A simple google search will tell you how to do it, prop u/j's don't vary much.

Saying that it is easy to damage the races going at it with a big hammer which will reduce their life.

It would be sensible to find a local mechanic/garage who will have suitable presses, they shouldn't charge you too much especially if a cash job.

Glad you got it sorted mate :clappy: :clappy:
Give a 'stealership' a call tomorrow for a quote for fitting a new propshaft (as that'll be what they would fit) and you'll be   I'm sure :thumbright:
