Hi Guys & Gals

Bit a a rant sorry but once you have read this I'm sure you'll understand why
My 2015 Nissan Navara 3l dci has been in for a service, mot, chassis recall check and a satnav update today

Desira Nissan Great Yarmouth quoted me £100 to £150 to update the sat nav but because they have to buy a licence for this particular Sat Nav the price is £250.00

£250.00 to update a sat nav seriously and to top it all this is what it will cost every time a new sat nav update comes out what a rip off why would you install a system like that eventually its going to cost more to update the sat nav than the car is worth

Rant over thanks for reading

Graham

Good rant.

To make it worse:

The latest update is 2015, but based on the map updates from 2013. £250 for a five year old update!!!

The routing is rubbish. If I am running Waze or Google maps, the Sat Nav can easily be an hour different for a 2 hour drive.

P.S. We try to keep this forum fully family and work friendly, so I have toned down your language.

Apparently you have to buy a licence for this system so that is why it is so expensive but I would have thought you would have purchased the licence when you purchased the car don't worry that question will be asked when I go to collect the car today will keep you posted

The other thing that has really got up my nose is last year I when I took the car in for service I told them that paint on the spare wheel on the car was all flaking and asked if this was covered by warranty NO they said its the spare and we don't cover that as it is always covered in mud and dirty from the road and is not usually washed ok I thought no problem came home bought an alloy wheel revival kit and sorted it

So this year took the car in and the back passenger wheel is flacking to the extent that earlier in the year it was pointed out to me by the lovely people from VOSA I was told to get rid of the flaky paint asked Nissan if by doing this if it would effect the warranty No came the reply said I would have it sorted at service only to be informed there is a kerb scuff on the wheel its not covered OH HAPPY DAY beginning to wonder if buying a brand new Nissan from Desira Group was a good idea

Just for future reference Weldman you can easily update the Satnav yourself without paying them to do it. They are correct about the licence but to be fair thats not Nissan its the provider which is Navteq who have morphed into 'Here' They provide data for most in car packages.

It is very easy to replace the SD card and would have cost you £109 direct from Here https://nissan.navigation.com/produ...g_Navara_2016_connect3/Connect-3-Europe-V3/sku/T1000-25985/en_GB/NissanEMEA/GBP. If you followed the update link from Nissans website this is where you would have ended up.

So long story short I would be going back to Desira and asking for a refund as it takes but a blink to change the SD card . I have never felt the urgent need to update the in car Satnav as it pretty much get you where you want and their mapping is always at best 2 years out of date. I use my phone if it gets tricky as the mapping is fairly dynamic through Google

Hi popsdosh
Thanks for your help
The satnav in my Navara doesn't have a sd card it has to be update by plugging it into a computer for 4 hours according to Desira
I have looked at all the possible options but couldn't find anything for this type of system

Cheers

Heres what you needed then its DVDs that you just feed in the DVD slot in order and it updates . Simples they have fed you BS that cost you a lot!

All the Teknas and Outlaws from facelift 2010 used these apart from a very few, very late ones that had the present systen installed but they are very rare and would update via SD card.

Imagine how i feel my map is 10 year out of date
Thats why ive just ripped it all out and fitted a android unit with Google maps
£230 for a android 8 with dvd and I'll recoup most of that by selling the parts ive took out
Ill be doing a full review with links once ive got it set up properly

I thought the V6 had to be updated by the usb port, either way I don't intend to spend £150 trying to improve the poor thing.

This is why in-car satnav will be dead inside 5 years, in my opinion. People's phones are already very effective computers, no need to have an antiquated one entombed in the dash.

That said, offline map availability can be handy.

Surely the phone ones are usable offline ,well certainly mine is all it relies on is GPS signal . The great thing is though new routes and roadworks are there pretty much straight away. It would be nice if the audio could be easily integrated through the speakers though.

Not all phone apps carry full off-line map data. The GPS part of the phone only provides coordinates, time, speed and direction - not the actual maps, which normally need a mobile data connection (or WiFi) and are downloaded as needed. Generally, a dedicated SatNav carries the full set of Euro street maps in its internal storage - in the case of mine, even a map update is rarely less than a 2GB download....

For me, a good, big screen that can be seen even when it's sunny is important - my middle-sized phone doesn't cut it. I see no reason why the large screens in cars couldn't be used to screen-mirror wirelessly off a phone to solve this problem.

Basically, all car SatNav should be running Android or some similar common OS in this day and age, rather than the limited, proprietary OS seen on most cars. A closed OS is almost as useful as an 8-track player....

We use Co-pilot (caravan) and it is superb. I think it cost £30 or so to buy the app but it has off-line maps and free lifetime upgrades.

The in-dash Nissan system seems outdated and even our TomTom 5000 tries to route us on non-caravan freindly routes. TomTom won't sell the caravan map, they expect you to pay £300 for a whole new sat nav.

If we could get the screen to mirror the phone (as mentioned above) that would future proof us but I'm not holding my breath

Google maps can be pre-downloaded but it takes up a huge chunk of memory

Indeed, but they expire after 30 days unless you refresh them.
I use google maps on my phone, but only really when walking, and one nice thing is you can choose to download only say, the town you are in, rather than whole countries which does save a huge amount of storage on your phone.
