I’ve recently bought a 2010 navara auto euro 5 188bhp model and after a month the turbo give up fully you couldn’t even turn the rotor with no symptoms no smoke no bang no crash no nothing

I’ve since changed the turbo for reconditioned one (twice) as the first one had a problem with the actuator closing on the rotor when turned off but the second one has gone on and seems to be better

but I’ve noticed alot of back pressure and smoke from the breather pipes and a lot of oil going back in to the air filter/turbo feed hose
At first I thought it was the turbo seal had gone but in further inspection it seems to be the oil from the breather going back in and drowning the turbo

is there any common faults that could cause this

also from cold it runs very tappety and smokes a lot for a few minutes until it gets warm

Please help as I don’t have much experience with these engines

I’m used to vag engines

It’s not in the air filter!!!
Just the intake pipe to the turbo from the air box as that’s where the breather connects
And the oil runs down the hose as it’s slopped downwards and liquid travels down it sits in the lowest point which is the intake side of the turbo

Ok, misread your post.

As before expect some oil in the intake. I would try to track down why it is rattly and smokey when cold first. Maybe an injector is failing, not common, but can happen.

The Navara is no different from a VAG in that you need to take a step by step approach to problem solving. First thing to do is to read this post to get you started.

I have checked most things and my mechanic reckons that these all run with heavy breathing ,but I just wanted to know if there was any common faults with these, with this being a navara forum

I thought someone may have experienced similar symptoms or would know what to look for but my bad

“I’ll start from the beginning checking things I’ve already checked from reading that link you’ve sent over”

but thanks for the help

I must say the term (in a motoring environment) of heavy breathing is not something I have heard before. What does it mean?

The crank case seems to breath heavy if I take the the breather hose of to the air filter induction hose it pumps smoke and specks of oil out more so then I’ve seen on other makes and models

Only comment I can make is we have had 12 D40s and none of them have used oil that has needed topping up between changes. Are you glow plugs working ? most likely cause of rattle and smoke this time of year !
Would the glow plugs rattle until the car warms up

it seems to start ok, but then smokes and rattles for the first few minutes of running in the morning from cold once warm it’s fine

Glow plugs DONT rattle but engine will have a pronounced diesel rattle until it gets warm, If its whitish smoke that would be another reason to suspect the glow plugs as that suggests un burnt diesel. They are a relatively common issue on those. Blue smoke its burning oil but likely to get worse when warm . Black smoke indicates over fuelling or lack of air charge.
Do you really have that much experience with diesels?

It’s sounds like it may be the glow plugs then, as the smoke is white and smells of Unburnt fuel

Is there anyway of checking the glow plugs on these navs

do you know?

thanks for your help I really appreciate it

Only way is to check the resistance in the plugs or take them out and power them up . First check however would be to disconnect the power supply to them and make sure you are getting power from the relay to them when you go to start the vehicle .
