So I have an 08 D40 Auto and I've had quite a few people say 'oh you should definitely fit an EGR blanking plate'. Now I can see why you would but it doesn't sit right with me in terms of thinking that blanking it off would cause issues now or later on down the line.
I would like to hear your opinions positive and negative on this. Blanking it looks easy but is it really worth it?

It depends on how much soot has built up. The EGR valve only opens at low throttle (letting exhaust into the intake) so you are more likely to have build up if your driving is urban rather than motorways.
I'd say we do a mixture of motorway and urban driving and towing a horse trailer at times too. I have seen someone say that blanking the EGR is a bad idea when towing? Also my Nav has done 80k so if I was to blank the EGR now I would want to give it a clean as I can imagine all the buildup in it now might eventually set with it getting no flow through it. Unsure.

I've seen pictures on the internet of some other intake manifold getting quite sooted up, never heard of an engine not running though.
If you are really worried, disconnect a pipe or two and look at the soot build up.
I take the view that if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

I installed a blanking plate but removed it after a couple of months. I reckon the engine runs more smoothly and better with the EGR system providing it's in good order. I also installed a catch can. There are benefits with metering a small amount of exhaust gas back into the inlet system ... lower combustion temperatures for starters. There are many articles online explaining the pro's and cons of EGR.
In Australia it's illegal to disable the EGR.

One big advantage of blanking off the EGR. when the EGR pipe cracks on the flexi-bend and Repco want $1,800 for a new pipe. You can save by blanking it off at the manifold . Been there done that does not seem to hinder the performance of the Ute .
