I have just bought a 2019 Navara Tekna DCI pickup and have encountered a problem with the spare Remote Control Key Fob (RCKF). The RCKF that I use for everyday use is working as it should but I decided to replace the batteries in both RCKFs just in case they were getting low in power although I am very surprised at the distance the working RCKF will operate at. I decided initially to replace the battery in the spare RCKF first just in case anything went wrong. I am not sure but I think that the spare RCKF was working as it should prior to dismantling.

I dismantled the spare RCKF which, incidentally, I thought had a very poor design of connecting the two halves together, and replaced the battery with a new CR 2032 3V battery, the same as was in situ prior to dismantling. I then placed the new battery in the clips and joined the two halves of the RCKF back together again.

But when I tried the RCKF at a distance to check that it worked I found that while it would unlock the doors of the pickup it wouldn’t lock them again. I stood by the vehicle with the RCKF and while I could open the doors with the small knob on the door handle I still couldn’t lock them. I sat in the vehicle with the RCKF on top of the dash and tried to start it and got a message on the screen between the rev. counter and the speedo. which said “WARNING – NO KEY DETECTED” In essence, the locking tab on the RCKF doesn’t operate anything and parts of the RCKF is not recognised by the vehicle.

The two lock/unlock pads on the outside of the RCKF work freely enough and I think they are connecting with the corresponding buttons on the circuit board but something somewhere isn’t working as it should. My first reaction is that there is a fault on the circuit board but would be very grateful for any help and/or advice on the matter.

I would agree with your diagnosis. Unless you have a fancy code reader, go to an auto locksmith and get a new key and get it programmed.
Thank you very much for that. Your reply and advice was very much appreciated. When a new RCKF is programmed does the programmer need to be close to the vehicle, have access to the RCKF that does work, or anything like that ?

They will definitely need to plug into the OBD port, I think they might need the working key to turn the ignition on.
Thank you again for that. Just out of curiosity can you tell me where/what the OBD port is please ? And I have another question if I may ? I can't find the diif. lock switch on the pickup. Would this have been an optional extra when it was new ? I thought that the Tekna model had everything. It's obviously got the Hi/Lo 2wd & 4wd but can't find a switch for the diff. lock. Thanks again for your post. I really do appreciate your help.

Thank you. I'll have a look for that. I suppose that if you had someone who didn't know what a diff. locks was and how they worked then damage could be an issue if they tried to turn while it was engaged. Not to worry, I've never had a road vehicle that has had a diff. lock anyway so we will just have to muddle along. :) Thanks again for your help.

I still have ny old blue & silver 54 reg. D22 which I was using up until a week ago and there were times when nipping across the fields when it was wet when a diif. lock would have been handy. Don't do so much of that these days.

Just thought that I would update about my Remote Control Key Fob issue. Thankfully it has been resolved. I took both fobs to a local auto locksmith and he took the faulty one to his bench, spent certainly no longer than 2 minutes on it, I don't think he even opened it, and hey presto, it was fixed ! He is a bit of a character and when I asked him casually (twice) what he had done to make it work he said that if he told people that he would soon be out of a job ! I have read somewhere that you can press both buttons on the fob while holding it close to the ignition button and if that's true then I wonder if that's how I might have jiggered it up in the first place ? Anyway, all's well that ends well and many thanks to you @landmannnn for all the help that you have given me.

Yes, it's something that has been bugging me for days. Is it possible to alter something on a RCKF just by holding both tabs down on the fob at the same whilst the fob is also being held against the ignition button ?

I think that's always been the case with cars, technology moves on so "last year's model" is just not as good.

Interesting that my 1925 Citroen can do 60mpg (albeit with the optional fancy carburettor), so perhaps things haven't moved on quite so much.

Yes, I also think it is part of a marketing ploy called "Planned Obsolescence" "Oh No Sir, sorry, that intricate piece of technology is no longer available - your only option is a new vehicle"
I had an almighty row once with the new man in my sister in law's life, he is a 'designer'.
They came round to visit once while I was replacing a dead capacitor in an electric fan.
He fatally used those same words 'planned obsolesence', along with throw it away and get a new one.
I then mentioned that after 4 years we were still using the Samsung washing machine they had thrown out, all because it needed a fivers worth of carbon brushes!
It was then that the proverbial hit the fan (pun intended).
PS
Still running my D22, MOT'd it last week the tester could not get the smoke analyser to recognise the engine was running, he said he had never seen such a clean running diesel, looks like it's here for a few more years!
