I've just purchased a 55 plate Navara D40 auto.

The chap I bought it from is a good friend of mine. Over the last year or so it's been munching through rear wheel bearings, to the point where one of the bearings checked out whilst he was driving it.
He purchased a used axle from eBay, which we fitted.
However, it has a whine/grinding noise coming from the diff.
This is apparent at any speed above 10mph.
When we changed the oil there were a small amount of filings on the sump plug...
Assume the diff is knackered.
This axle was from a 2007 Nav.

My question is, I've read that the early Navs suffered with soft half-shafts - leading to leaking seals etc.
If this is the case, does anyone know when they were changed to harder ones?

My thinking is, could I get away with using the half-shafts from the 2007 axle, in the original axle... Rather than sourcing another potentially knackered axle.

Cheers

It's been said that the issues with the early models was using seals that were too hard which wore a groove in the axle.

I believe this was sorted around 2007. Anyway, no issues with swapping the old did into the new axle. Check the breather isn't blocked too.

Cheers @landmannnn

Ah so it's not the shafts that were softer, it was the seals which were too hard. Thus wearing grooves into the shafts.
Sounds like swapping the shafts is a logical thing to try then.
Breather was already switched over to an aftermarket one.
