I occasionally engage 4wd to maintain oil circulation & check operation but the last couple of times it has been very hard to steer & quite noisey. Is there anything I can check to calm my nerves about these expensive bill threats that are thrown about? It engages & disengages without any protest. With winter here I don't want to miss a moment.

Thanks in anticipation :salute:

Only use 4 wheel drive when you are on slippery surfaces - the noise and steering feeling is most probably caused by the whole drive train getting wound up - there are numerous posts on here about it.

Good plan - but dont steer round corners when you dont need 4wd, only do this in a straight line.
As Skin says, otherwise you will get transmission wind up and something will go bang

also not for very long. most cars front and rear tires are at different states of wear so you have slightly smaller tires on the rear compared to the front. that difference causes wind up even when driving in a straight line.
wait till you drive on gravel or very wet road.
