I have a 2005 Navara.
It had an engine replacement for £4,500 after the crankshaft seized as 60,000 miles in March 2009.
It has now done 146,000 miles and seems fine.

I have read as many of the threads as possible on here about this and there is lots of advice based on engine numbers. I know my engine number is meant to be somewhere near the alternator but 30 minutes above, below and virtually inside the engine bay with a bright torch has yet to reveal what my engine number might be.

I know that the engine might have been replaced by one that had been on the shelf for a while but is there any estimated 'Safe Date' after when we think Nissan actually managed to avoid grenading themselves*?

*Please let the answer be before 2009, preferably before 2008

Re: D22 engines - Is there a safe date? I can't see engine n

As you can't see it, I think you will have to 'drop' the alternator down to see the eng No. clearly, even once you have the number it will not help you.
I wouldn't put too much store in the report stating 'crankshaft seized' either, 4 1/2 grand is the price of a new Nissan short motor, this would not be needed with a damaged crankshaft as it would only be this component that needed replacement, more than likely your original engine had a hole punched in the block by an escaping con rod.
If it has an X suffix it will be a Nissan supplied and fitted replacement, this will carry the original eng No., BUT there is no way of knowing when this engine was made, it could have been made and fitted within a few weeks, or left in a stores somewhere for who knows how long?
Nissan themselves will be of NO use at all, they don't even acknowledge the problem exists!
The D40 shares the same block and as far as I know no D40's have 'exploded' in the same manner as the D22 engines, so you might be lucky and have a late engine, or maybe not?
Who knows?
It is a complete lottery, the only way to be sure is to do the upgrade.
Sorry for the bad news, but better than a blow up.
Even worse news is that the majority of blow ups occur between 60-80,000 miles, your second engine is now at
86,000.
Obviously this is NOT a diagnosis, it has been written in good faith, you may drop your sump to find all is well, in which case please do NOT write me poisonous emails slagging me off, been there, received them!

Why does every one of you agree with my gut feel, as was posted on my It my Truck chipped thread by someone - I am living on borrowed time.

Best Nissan specialist near Southampton please?

http://www.kaizermotor.co.uk/ One of our sponsors and about 120 miles away?

Billcar about 184 miles :awesomework

This link is to Highland Navara's 55 plate D22. It's engine had been changed by Nissan sometime in its life prior to Ian taking it on. It's engine let go spectacularly with massive bottom end damage. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=70305

Yeah - I had seen that thread.

Any specialists recommended slightly nearer Southampton?

I guess I am going to have to leave it with them to get it fixed so would like to be able to get back home while I wait.

I don't think you'll find a specialist garage like Billcar or Kaizermotor. I took mine to Billcar and got train back 5 years ago no problems. Do you use a local garage for anything that you trust order the parts from Billcar and get them to do work. The info from these guys is spot on.
