First thing is to check filters including the micro filter in the fuel pump.
Usually they dont need the glowplugs to start unless it is very cold.
White smoke could indicate water in the fuel.

As above, if all that fails, try checking the buz bar for corrosion, it does happen on the early MK1's.
But white smoke does indicate does indicate water in the fuel as Digger says. :thumbright:

Yup as Digger says, its a wiggly bit of covered copper metal connecting the glow plugs.
Highly unlikly to be glow plugs.
Micro is a must to remove on these early ones, but it wont cause white smoke so try changing your fuel filter for starters.
Let us know how you get on :thumbright:

hi ,replaced fuel filter ..the slime and water that dropped out the bottom was mad ,next morning it started up alot better not 1st turn but better ,monday morning wow it was cold 2 to 3 mins to start but did start ,came out today at 6am slight frost started 1st turn of the key ..ive not taken out the micro filter ,will try and do that at the weekend when ive found it that is ,cheers

If you had that much muck in the fuel filter there is a very good chance that the micro filter will be partially blocked, probably be a different truck after its cleaned out.

hi ,well found the 17mm and union took it out spring out no fillter in there ,some days/ mornings it starts 1st turn some about 2 mins , not a clue now ????
If there was a spring under the banjo then the filter is still in there :!:
It's only the size of a *** filter :study: viewtopic.php?f=46&t=25859
Jay (Spirit) had a garage look at her motor and said that there was no filter present in hers for defno
She got it home and hooked it out herself :clappy:
You'll need a large safety pin with a hook on the end of the pin or a bit of welding rod to hook it out :thumbleft:

cheers for the replys ,i used an screw driver thingy that got an hooked end about 5inch long could feel the bottom with it ,with a small lite i could see a very small tube like thing at the very bottom ,put it back together it started 1st turn went up the road it cut out and ran horrible ,took the 17mm out again one of the 2 washers had the rubber seal broke so replaced that it started fine ,like i said this morning 2mins to start but wen it do start its a 4 not 234 and a lot of white/lite blue smoke

That's very odd because it's the filter that's stopping the spring falling into the pump body AFAIK  and the white/blue smoke is typical of the engine being starved of fuel
The coolant level is good, no oil in the coolant and visa-versa?
No 'scum' on the oil filler cap and rocker assembly?
You've checked the glow relay is 'clicking' in and out when the ignition is switched on?
The 'buz bar' connecting the glow plugs has no corrosion on the glow plug joint or fractures in it and the connection to it is good?
