Hi, Looking for help/info. In November my truck went into limp mode, engine light came up on the dash board, smoke coming out of the exhaust. As it was one month away from a routine fuel filter change; i changed out the filter, fixed or so i thought. However; today and only 150 miles later i have the same problem! I can drive for ten miles or so and all is well after which it drops into limp mode with smoke! Park up, over night, drive off same problem after ten miles or so. An ideas?

It could be a number of things ranging from blown head gasket to a faulty injector to a faulty fuel pump and many more.

I would start with the fuel since replacing the filter helped. Could you have contaminated fuel? It is not unheard of to get water in the fuel which collects in the fuel filter.

Thanks. I checked the fuel for water when i changed the filter; none. I have drained the new filter, this morning and no water. Question; is it safe to drive in limp mode to a garage or should i have it recovered? I had a complete engine rebuild, with Billcar, two years ago so hope it is not head gasket.

Update. Took truck into garage; running as it should. Chap took it out for a long run and thrashed it! Would not drop into limp mode. Put it on the diagnostic machine, could not find the problem. I am to take it back it next time it drops into limp mode.
