Hi

My rear diff seems to be banging and clunking recently, I've heard changing the oil can help this?!?

What sort of oil do I replace it with?

I've topped it up with hypoid 80/90, but speaking to a mechanic friend, he said to put in a Lucas oil?

Any ideas?

Thanks

The rear axel is fitted with a LSD and needs LSD specific oil to enable for it to operate correctly :!:
Putting in hypoid 80/90 is a NO NO :adminfinger
Hopefully not to much damage has been done :fingersx
Drain the differential and refill with a LSD oil such as Comma http://www.commaoil.com/passenger-vehic ... s/view/195 which is sold in many auto factors or posted from ebay or from here but they are expensive http://www.smithandallan.com/prodpage.aspx?id=1867
Get 2 litres as the diff holds about 1.2 litres and should be changed every 36,000 miles/3 years or sooner if towing or used off-road

Hi,

Thanks for all your advice, replaced the oil with the comma oil! Made a difference straight away! You may have saved my diff.

Cheers guys!
maybe for piece of mind drop it out again after 4/6 weeks and any **** left inside will come out with new oil.
then fill with new again, after all its cheap enough and a quick job :thumbleft:

Agree as these diff oils rarely get changed at the correct periods and it can only do some good for sure :thumbright:

I've drained mine a few times and found some iron filings on the magnetic bung from time to time due to working the truck hard, very hard
For the price of ÂŁ10-15 for the oil I'd drop it out and see what's on the magnet again and at least you know you've flushed through the LSD friction plates
What have got to loose :fingersx
