Hi, Ive just had my 2002 d22 head gasket replaced , while i was at it i thought it would be a good idea to change the timing chains and all the bits that go with it.
Got a kit off ebay ,which the mechanic fitted with no probs .
Pickuo sounded lovely ....for 20 miles ,then started making the most horrendous noise .
Took it back to the mechanic ,he took the timing chain cover off to find the guide ( top chain ) had snapped round the bolt holes at both ends.
bought a replacement from nissan fitted it and guess what ...
that one snapped after 3 miles .
Anyone got any clue as to whats going on ??
my mechanic is stumped ,this is the first and last navara he's ever worked on
Joking aside ...anyone ?

sounds to me as if the chain is grabbing the guide and snapping it off. What brand is the kit you got off ebay and how much was it if you don't mind me asking?

hi , this is the company ,
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NISSAN-D22-PI ... 1c47c1529d

i didnt have the head gasket with mine ,just the timing chain kit .
It cost 140 quid .

That kit looks suspiciously like the FAI kit that has failed on quite a few D40s.

Cheap rubbish that will kill your engine. You would be better replacing your old parts, there has never been a problem with the original chain setup on the D22.

The reason I ask about price is because I currently have an issue on my d40, fitted a euro car parts timing chain and its stretched after just 4 months and is giving me grief, so bought the real deal today from billcar.

The company who you got yours from offer a 12 month warranty, have you made them aware of your problem?

Also, why the chain change on your truck? the d22's didn't suffer from any chain problems that I know of.

I changed it following advice from people in the trade that told me it was the thing to do
i have been studying pictures and diagrams online and i am convinced i have a piece missing from my setup.
on this image , which is obviously sideways , on the guide on the top chain , there's the guide , then chain , then a black plastic strip , well i dont ever recall seeing the strip in there , if this was missed out would that allow enough movement in the chain to break the guide ?

Hi, there was a batch of d22's that had an issue with faulty chain guides.
Mine was replaced foc by Nissan in 2008 under a recall campaign that they had.
They did not change the chains though as they said they were good enough to last the lifetime of the truck.
If you contact Nissan they will tell you if this campaign is still going and if your truck needs it.

Billcar do use genuine parts except where there is an upgrade necessary.
