I received this PM from Dave at Billcar looking for information

Hi,

As you might of heard or maybe its already posted there seems to be some Navara chassis problems corroding cracking/breaking, I have been in contact with Nissan & we are in need of the below information.

Reg Numbers,
chassis Numbers
Mileages
Photo’s

Maybe you could set up post, or through a pm they could email us direct.
I do understand that not everyone wishes to post the data of vehicle online.

Kind Regards Dave
Email, engineering@billcar.co.uk
I would appreciate if the basic information is also shared here even if it is just vehicle age/mileage and some pictures.

Update on my Truck, with it booked in for October I decided to call another dealer, they can inspect it next Saturday :)
So will drop in and see what they say, mine will be 12 yrs in June so happier that they will check before then...
They did say that they were overwhelmed with trucks to treat and cannot give me a date for doing this.. but at least if its confirmed that it needs done then they should honour it.

They all get treated if not for the scrap heap! Thats where I think the confusion has come about with the previous dealer they are all pretty quick getting them inspected but all have a long list to treat. From what you said about the previous dealer I assumed that was for the treatment as they wanted it a week the inspection takes an hour or two.

Quick update, dealer called and cancelled my visit, found out that there were also two outstanding recalls... power seat harness and power seat switch! So now booked in for next weekend and they will have a courtesy car for me, thats the good news
with the covid-19 issue ramping up and me being "at risk" I am too worried to risk the unecessary exposure. I will have to cancel and see if they will collect and return the truck at some point.

another update, Nissan cant collect the truck.... the dealer told me that if I cant get to them before the end of the month my claim will be rejected
I dropped a quick mail to Nissan UK to ask if they would honour my claim due to the current circumstances, they said YES... well done Nissan, credit where credit is due..??

Na, I wouldn't write it off just yet.

You haven't even tried cleaning up any bad spots to check.

For sure, from the picture ti looks to be pretty well flaked up, but it's impossible for anyone to tell unless inspected themselves.

The steel is thin on any modern vehicle, so the chances are some spots may need attention, spring hangers, cleats, out riggers, cross members etc etc. But until you check properly, you won't know if simply a spot of welding will fix it up strong. Question is, is it worth it.

All that being said, it's been left way too late, someone has been carried away with the top shiny bit, and forgot the truck has a bottom bit.

I have seen a vehicle with a lot less than that obvious flaking condemned! It already has full depth perforation of the metal and the main chassis rust from the inside out. As you say with the age of the vehicle its very unlikely that Nissan will take anything other than the cheapest option to them and im afraid thats write off. Must admit it worries me that with all the publicity theres been, people are still buying them without checking them first.

You live and learn popsdosh, I know a lot more now than I knew when I bought it. I never intended buying a Navara, I was looking at Mitshibushi's, but the 3 I had looked at weren't worth the crazy money being asked, this came available at half the cost and after a quick google I read a couple of posts including the chassis and went to see it.... It was cold wet and snowing, the truck was cheap and had been MOT'd 2 weeks prior. I took a punt.

Either way, if Nissan pay out or I have to weld it, it will serve its purpose. It was going to cost me £1500 to put a tow bar on my car so I could go to the dump with garden **** and move fire wood around, and this wasn't much more. I go to a local motocross circuit to take photographs, the route in has already damaged my front spoiler, the truck will save me an expensive repair here. Also I used it through the snow this year, where I live is quite high up and we get the worst of the snow even compared to areas 10 miles away. The thought of damaging my rear wheel drive 3.0ltr car driving in snow scares the **** out of me. So all considered its a cheap intro to 4x4 and pick up's. I will only do a couple of thousand miles a year with it.

On the plus side, I now know I want one and will use it, so later in the year a newer replacement will be getting looked at :)

Nissan will pay you out ! Dont worry on that one and have been giving fair money, however they wont cover any extra you spend on it now ,its a shame for you but that is why they have got cheaper. To be honest the previous owner would have got more for it if they had checked it. If it was me I would be questioning how it got an MOT so soon before you bought it as the examiners have clear instructions on how to look carefully

FWIW if you look again for your use and the roads you describe get a L200 as the transmission will suit you better as you can use it in 4WD on tarmac without screwing up the transmission. I am looking forward to it finding its way into the 2022 Navara.

Hi guys new to the forum, have read a lot about the rust problems and my 2006 nav failed it’s mot on the rust on the chassis so the previous owner had the strength plates welded in place, went back to the same mot and passed, after reading a lot about this I am very worried as I ha e 3 kids and a new born on the way, as the truck is 14 years old will they still check and would they still pay out. Due to being on the covid19 don’t no how to go about this, who would I contact etc I’m just about to have all the truck sign writing and have just had new wheels arrive etc but I don’t want it to fail on me pic of my truck attached. Hope someone can fill the light.

Hope these are clear and helps. Don’t think it will let me upload a video as it didn’t show up the video when trying to upload.

To be honest OP I would take the truck to a honest MOT tester and get their view on it as there is a big difference between a patch up job to get an MOT and a long term up to the job fix. I am always sceptical about some welding repairs as the welding in itself causes another weak point. You are right to be cautious with your family situation. So put your mind at rest and get it checked! Sadly Nissan only take responsibility up to 12 yo ,however the previous owner could have taken advantage of the check when it was first available.

Hi thanks again for your reply, I’m going to book it in for a mot in the morning, don’t want to spend money on a full service and full wrap for my gym company to then the car not drivable, I have bought everything already wheels service kit, roll bars, etc so at least everything can go off worse case. Thanks again how do the pictures look above.

Well it’s just this min been dropped off so I will let you all no how I get on going over it all with a fine tooth pick, where’s it’s had the new plates is that we’re it tends to snap, guessing with the plates makes it a bit better. Let’s just hope for the best apart from that no rattles or bangs drives straight.
Only thing annoying is when doing over 40mph seems like I get a continuous wind noise coming from the front window like the vents are shut when driving below 30mph seems fine.
Love the forum got to page 24 last night read loads of peoples posts.

Update, Full check over was done by a top mot place who has owned many 4x4 !! Was told welding strength plate was done perfect very good job, slight rust all over but nothing to worry about, rusty but trusty his words was, he has owned one before and said he has seen much worse, have a list of things I have to do but nothing major.

He did notice a leak from the rear pinion seal he said that’s leaking, why we was there we done the rear lsd oil, when drained he said it was horrible had water in it so he flushed this twice with new oil, we also have ordered the pinion seal from Milner 4x4

An from there we done the front diff oil and transfer box oil too,

full engine flush was told oil didn’t look to bad so that’s a plus side.

auto box flush also just because not that there was any problem just piece of mine we didn’t do the filter or gasket though as couldn’t find anywhere that stocked these.

air filter, fuel filter, pollen and oil filter obviously changed, now for the fun bit next door jfa automotive remap this was sold to me once I knew the car was 100% solid. There was a few things they had noticed and have told me to get done but nothing that’s dangerous. Below is what I have been told.

1. exhaust flexi blowing somewhere at the front.

2.fuel pipe breather snapped nothing on the end of it just a loose pipe,

3. Rear spare tyre valve won’t hold pressure

4. Osf roll bar link warn

5. Slight knock at rear diff when accelerating. ??

6. Auxiliary belt split

so Not the cheapest day but money well spent I now no my family are safe.

many help with the above problems or best place to get the parts, the slight knocking I can’t guess what this can be but I myself can’t hear it.

Thanks all who commented and helped as best they could :)

by the way the remap drive home wow car pulls very well no smoke and also got 42mpg at 75mph on way homeI got 37 on the way there with cruise control and auto box

Eventually got the truck inspected yesterday, got a call saying it had passed!! So there keeping it a few days to do the treatment at the same visit. There was one in the workshop when I dropped mine off and the tub was sitting outside in the car park..... so they will have had some practice :)
They also done some mod to the drivers seat wiring as well? Apparently an outstanding recall.

Better start thinking about fixing all the other things now.....

Good show!
The seat recall is the wireing can get trapped in the seat runners and cut into, causing a short and activating the seat adjustment !(possibly whilst driving)
The recall re-routes the wiring and encases it in some trunking!

Yes... Yes.. NO!!
Passed the inspection, got a call on Thursday, come and pick it up... went this morning, there's your keys and by the way the chassis is unsafe.. Nissan will call you within 5 days.
Girl at the desk was not very informative, think she was expecting me to have a rant..... She said that Nissan had changed their policy re warranty, not sure what she meant, I asked if it would be "bought back" now and she said they would make me an offer..

So will wait and see what Nissan say.

They fitted the seat wiring mod and painted the chassis from the back of the cab to the bumper.. I can see a few bits they missed, then scrapped it  I wonder if they get paid for the warranty work...

So, now to search for another one.. don't know if I should take the mountain top off along with the liner and the tie down rails before it goes? Might be useful for the next one. I'm not that keen on the mountain top, bought a garden shredder the other week and it wouldn't fit in the tub!! It really restricts what you can carry.
