As we could be in for snow in a few days can i have some advice on the 4x4 please. My understanding is i keep the car in two wheel drive at all times. Even if it is snowy on the roads do i still keep it in 2 wheel drive unless i get stuck or if we have snow / ice and i can still drive in 2 wheel drive do i just put the car in 4 wheel drive anyway?

I appreciate this may seem a stupid question but as a new 4x4 owner i have no idea. While i am on the subject also could you help with the other drive types, i assume push is exactly that, if i need to push another car or something but why anybody would do this in their car is beyond me, and the other setting which ive just forgotten  i think is incase you get very stuck and this is the only option left if you are in thick mud or something.

Probally totally wrong on all counts,

while in 4x4 mode is their a speed limit, and finally do you have to be stationary to switch to 4x4 and back again.

cheers all

You can shift to 4wd on the fly mate and if there is a thick layer of icey snow on the floor then stick it in 4wd before you set off otherwise only engage 4wd when you loose traction as for the speed you wont be gunning it in the snow anyway  Only use 4wd low if your really stuck! 4wd high is normaly ample to get you out of most situations :thumbright:

??????? push the 4x4 switch you mean, why is this. i thought it just turned like a dial or was that a joke.... :?[/quote:ln193540]

No mate, no joke, as you rightly say you turn the switch to get into 4WD Hi, but to get into 4WD Low you have to push the switch, don't go pushing stuff with your truck mate, otherwise it's a trip to the body shop

 Told you it was a dumb question, i think i get it, when i turn the dial to the push position i cant turn any further unless i push the button in you mean? Its bloody obvious when you know the answers aint it  well at least im learning.

Just to add, if i was going down a green lane so to speak which is classed as off road then again do i go straight into 4x4 mode anyway or only if i need to. Basically meaning i drive as normall down these tracks until i loose traction

As a novice i just assume that as soon as i go on some bumpy / muddy / wet ground i would just flick on the 4x4

You only push the dial in to engage 4wd low you can engage 4wd high simply by turning the dial and you can do that whilst on the move at relatively low speeds.Only engage 4wd when you know you will or you are loosing traction I.E if your on a dry gravel lane theres no need for 4wd but if your entering a muddy track that you know is slippery then engage it just as you leave hard ground.Basicaly if your wheels cant spin then stay in 2wd if your wheels can spin engage 4wd,does that make sense

Might be an idea to stick some weight over the back end like a couple of bags of sand over the axle. The 4wd will always work better if theres some weight back there :thumbleft:

Hey np mate, that's what we're all here for, to help each other :thumbright:

Just want to add mate, it's a good idea every so often to use the 4WD, as the lubes can stiffen up.

Every few weeks, (on a straight road) i engage the 4WD, drive for about a quarter of a mile, stop and disengage the 4WD, and that's it, keeps everything smooth

As steve says BUT, dont drive for long periods in 4x4 at high speed or try to go round tight corners as you will get transmission wind.....basically the truck will start to feel like its braking and jerking...Not good! this happenes as its not a perminant 4x4 system, 4x4 on the nav is only there to get you out the s**t :thumbright:

When you are in 4wd low range (so you have pushed the switch in and turned it another notch) you have to be stationRy to come out of it, and reverse a little to help the hubs disengage. In all th. Snow we had last feb I noticed that it can take up to 1 minute stationary for the ecu to decide to signal the hubs to disengage. Keep your eye on the tell tale graphic on the dash which gives the status of the 4wd system.
Also do not exceed 60mph in 4 wd whatever the conditions, although if you need the 4wd you will be doing well to hit60!
The system is an on demand system,so use it when you need it, turn it off when you don't. As per the advice above don't run about all the time in 4wd or something expensive will go bang!
Use common sense, if you are driving an patchy snow with occassional areas of Tarmac you will be fine in 4 wd, if you are on Tarmac nearly all the time turn it off

this is where the nav ability to change into 4wh high is fantastic, you can just switch it in and out as you need. Yu will not need low under normal circumstances, I only used
it last year to tow a 44 tonner up a hill cos it was blocking the dual carriageway!

The Nav is a very capable truck in just 2wd, plus i dont go off road  only used to to get up the hill to my mum and dads last year in the snow, tight bend at bottom going uphill, in 2wd nav just wanted to go sideways  so flick of a switch and up she went :thumbleft:
