It's fine when clutch pedal is pressed down, it has got noisier over the last couple of months. I've got it booked into a garage tomorrow for a check, am I looking at lots of £££.

Cheers..

Still a great Truck though..

I've taken my to a local garage for them to have a quick listen and 1st thing he said was DMF..

I never use my Truck for towing, well I have pulled a trailor twice in the last 10months so should i just go for a stright replacement or go for the upgrade?

Cheers..

I think you'd be MAD (oh, you are  ) if you replaced it with another.
Mine fell apart at 29k, replaced with exedy solid conversion and never looked back.
Dmf's are a superb idea, in practice I've dealt stronger farts.
Bin it mate, they're the weak link on a Nav!

Well here's the next installment on the Clutch/DMF saga..

Truck was booked in to my local Garage this morning to have new DMF and Clutch fitted, however got a call from them justnow asking me to pop in to have alook at something with them (sounded ominous).. :nailbiting

Got there and they said it had already had a conversion to Solid and that it was not the thing to do and it had subsequently caused the gearbox to ware and now when you pull on the shaft coming out of the gearbox it rattles and moves around in an egg shape fashion, you could also see on the clutch/DMF that it had worn unevenly and had ware marks on opposite sides..

He said that he could get a price for me to have gearbox reconditioned at Gear change which I have used before for my Moto X bikes years ago and I know they're sound. Any way while he was on the phone to them and explaining the rattle to the chap on the other end I heard someone else in the office shout out "It hasn't had one of those bloody solid convertions has it"? And they went on to say that they have done plenty of these and advised customers to stick with the DMF and not solid. :?

Having spent the last few months reading on here that solid is the way forward I now have to say that I'm not so sure, however I am aware that it's just my opinion from my own bad luck and I am no mechanic so I'm certainly not saying that what has been written on here is wrong as that is not the case either..

I'm now faced with a £2000 bill but I've just asked them to just go ahead and fit the new Clutch and DMF and put it all back together as I don't want to spend that much on it, so I'm only looking at £700 and I'll just see how long the gearbox lasts... :whoopdeedo

Anyone wanna buy a Navara... Only kidding, I still bloody love the Truck even though it blatently hates me!! :pale:

Cheers and sorry to have ranted on and on...

Hmm................. :wedgie springs to mind.

The first motion shaft coming out of the gearbox will move around as it's end is now not supported by the spigot bush housed in the flywheel :!:
The bearing in the gearbox on the first motion shaft must be ok as you'd have a noisy gearbox in all gears, the shafts oil seal would be leaking past the bearing carrier into the clutch centre plate causing 'clutch slip' and oil would be present within the bell housing area and leaking onto the ground, none of these faults have you reported previously

The clutch release bearing is the most likely cause of your fault, or in very rare cases the spigot bearing, not the horseshite they've given you

I suspect they only had a DMF clutch assembly's in stock hence the horse-***** they've feed you :puker: and as for their comment ' "It hasn't had one of those bloody solid convertions has it"? And they went on to say that they have done plenty of these' yeah right :really

Just my 2p

Hi Wozizname, I have to say that what you have just said makes perfect sense to me and I never thought of that at the time!
I'm waiting for the call to say that it's ready and I will drive it and find out.

And you're right I've not had any of the other problems and the gearbox has always felt lovely and smooth etc..

Thank you for your 2p mate it's much appreciated, I will update you later this evening as to the outcome..

Cheers,

Jamie..

Well I'm not sure what to do now... I'm going to have to take it back to the garage in the morning as not happy.

Now, they said it was good news when I turned up to collect it as they didn't have to replace the Solid Fly Wheel but did replace the Clutch.

The clutch does bite much lower down now but when pulling away in 1st or reversing it judders terribly for the 1st few feet and it never did this before.

They have charged me £450 for it but I'm not happy with how it is.

Does it take time for the clutch to bed in etc and if so will judder stop soon?

Sorry to have to hassle you again for answers but I'm stuck and don't know what to do. I've been taking my cars etc to the same garage for a few years now and have always trusted them.

Cheers,

Jamie..

So what parts have they replaced and what make/manufacturer are the parts :?:

***... This infuriates me, and it ain't my motor!
How hard is it to be honest with customers and do the job properly with proper parts.
I've never had a clutch judder from new parts. Anyone else???

Find out, as Woz says, "What parts & who's "?
New cover/plate/release bearing?
Did they check the spigot?
If you can get under the motor, make sure all the mountings have been put back correctly.
You shouldn't have any judder.

Yeah I'm so pi$$ed off right now.. I've paid almost £500 and I'm worse off... I wish I'd just thought sod it I'll live with the rattle when the Truck is running idle..

I don't want to have to fall out with them but at the same time I want it right, there's no way I can live with the juddering, it's far worse when reversing..

Thanks for your replies chaps, much appreciated..

Ditto to Biggi's comment :pale:

For all you/we know they could've just changed the release bearing :dunno
IF it's a new clutch then there's no way it should judder. In my 40 years in the 'game' I've NEVER experienced this problem :adminfinger
It'll judder if there's contamination on the friction material, ie oil or grubby hands whilst handling it :slaphead or a cheap 'n' nasty poorly constructed clutch has been fitted, containing weak springs and friction material :|
All the info about this solid flywheel system was at your disposal and the make/manufacturer being Exedy and you've chosen to ignore it :(
Sorry I really don't know what else to say mate :throw

Yeah fair comment Woz, it's not as if I hadn't read all of the posts on here about it.. So annoyed with myself for letting this happen..

I'm going to go back in to see them in the morning and see what can be done about it..

Thanks for taking the time to reply to me this evening Biggi and Woz..

Cheers,

Jamie..

Jamie...,
Get all the info you can, we can only try to help you.. I understand your in unknown waters, but we've had this topic covered loads and everyone's getting a little frustrated after spending time explaining/advising and then it gets ignored by lots.
I've never known a forum like this for the technology know how. The experience on here is second to non, even the non trade DIY guys have masses of knowledge :bowdown1

print this thread off and show them sort it or else trading standards here i come

#21 ·
Yep I couldn't agree more.. This is going down as a lesson learnt and a costly one at that..

I just hope they're good enough to be fair about it as I don't want to have to fall out with them but at the same time I'm not going to sit back and get mugged :wedgie

I'll be back with more info tomorrow and lets hope it's good news..

Cheers..

Jamie, how many miles has your truck covered and are you 100% sure that a solid conversion clutch assembly is fitted to it :?:
I realise you are reliant on the garage giving you this info being a 'layman'.
Ask to have the replaced parts returned to you (it's your right to do so) then you can post some photos up and we can see this wear and advise you accordingly :awesomework
:cheers2: Woz

if i win the euro millions on friday im going to buy the people on this site who know their **** from their elbow a fully equipped garage and set them up as forum preferred repair and care specialists for people who love their navs and what it fixed right first

Erm...
I've just read your post right through again.
When you looked at the clutch and you said DMF but I presume you mean flywheel, you said it had uneven wear...
What was unevenly worn?
The clutch plate/cover or flywheel???

Hi Biggi, hmm, I guess I meant flywheel but I'm not 100% sure :eek:ops And to be fair I'm not even sure which bit was worn, he just showed me a round black disc that had ware (scraping) on varios parts of it.

Sorry, I must look like a right nob for not knowing, I guess I just trust them to be straight with me!

Thanks Biggi,

Jamie.

Hi Woz, my Truck has done 91000 now and has FSH (not all dealer though)

Again, I have to admit I have no idea if what they showed me was a solid conversion as I've never seen either of them before.
I will ask for the replaced parts and do as you say, take pics etc and let you see..

I have already been in to see them this morning as they are right next to where I work and I'm just waiting for a call back from them.

Didn't get much sleep last night as I was so wound up about it and pi$$ed off with myself as like you all said it's not as if I didn't have all the info to hand, I just didn't want to go into them and tell them what they needed to fit if you know what I mean..

Thanks Guys,

Jamie..
