Morning Everyone,

I am new to not only Navara's but also to 4x4's as a whole!

I am currently driving a 2012 D40 ST 4x4 6sp Manual, which I have now owned for 12 months. It is completely stock, but I am of course looking to change that!

I am happy to hear any and all advice on the best modifications and additions.

Good morning and welcome to the forum! And welcome to 4x4ing!

You’ve got a great basis for an awesome machine there in your D40.

To comply with forum rules, when you can, please use a desktop browser to access your UserCP (top right of screen) and set your location. “Australia” or your nearest major town is fine.

If you’re still completely stock, the very first things to buy are a good recovery kit (shackles, snatch strap, and Maxtrax), plus a recovery point for the front and rear of your vehicle. Next, a set of decent tyres - AT or MT, name brand - remembering if you go much beyond 265 in width you might need wider wheels and a suspension lift - frankly the stock 255 size is fine (and heaps wider than we ever used back in the day).

Thank your for the welcome.

I was looking to buy some recovery gear from 4x4 Superstore, is this a good place to buy gear? Is the Kings brand a good brand or of should I stick to bigger brands like ARB?

Also what are some good brands of tyres? I am not looking to go full "mud bashing" but I would like to be able to get off-road a fair bit.

Kings are a brand name slapped to the side of generic products, usually Chinese-made. In many cases the stuff they sell is literally the same as you’d buy elsewhere; in other cases it’s rubbish.

I’d use them happily for cheaper things like straps and recovery gear; awnings; 12V accessories; swags. I’d avoid them for expensive gear like driving lights, air compressors, major mechanical components.

ARB and TJM charge heftily but are usually pretty good for warranty support. I prefer these guys for things I will actually attach to my car (and the ARB air compressors are amazingly durable). I have ARB bull bar, driving lights, air compressor and roof rack.

Places like BCF and Supercheap also sell reasonably priced stuff; BCF is a great place to buy a camping fridge if you’re a member because their members’ sales sometimes offer hundreds off.

Re tyres: this is a very individual experience. A reputable tyre shop should offer some good advice. I’d start out with all terrain (AT) tyres rather than super-aggressive mud tyres (MT), because MT are great in mud and bad in sand, and you’re not sure which you will prefer driving on yet. You can always buy MT next time if you find you need them.
