Ok guys I am sure this type of query has come up before, but for my peace of mind I need to know that the local Nissan agents have actually fitted the 128Kw engine they were supposed to fit. My old motor was YD25813144A the new one is YD25223887T. Thanks

Maybe I worded it wrong, what I am trying to find out is the engine output from its serial number and its year of manufacture. Here in South Africa there are several variants on the YD25 motor. 98Kw, 106Kw, 120Kw , 128 Kw and 140 Kw with the 98 and 106 being the most common. So I don't want to find out we have paid lots of money for an inferior motor, the service from the local Nissan agents has been appalling it's taken them 6 weeks to get the job done and at an exceptionally premium labour rate, double what the Mercedes, Range Rover Audi and BMW agents charge. so if there's a problem we sure are going to take it further. .

There are also different power outputs for different models in the UK as well.
Euro 3 emission engines put out 174bhp - from start of D40 up to mid / late 2006
Euro 4 emission engines put out 171bhp - from mid / late 2006 to 2009 (I think).
Euro 5 emission engines, cant remember output.

The above may not be totally accurate. I am sure someone will correct me.

The way to tell the difference between euro 3 and euro4 was that one had a silver rocker cover and the other had black. That is the rocker cover at the top of the engine, not that plastic bit that covers everything up. I cant remember which way round it is but it is on here somewhere and again I am sure someone will remember.

Here in South Africa we don't have your emissions standards so we don't talk so much about Euro standards. Our damaged engine had a silver valve cover, the one fitted by the dealers is black but looking at the EGR system it looks exactly the same as that fitted to the previous engine. Another problem that has emerged is a serious whine that get louder as the revs rise and another problem, that in contrast to our previous motor which pulled like a train from as little as 1400 revs, this one only seems to generate a little bit of get up and go from above 2000 revs. The whine might just be from one of the ancillaries, like the fan-belt idler, water-pump or alternator that came with the replacement motor.

Problem for us is that our trust in Nissan products has vanished, I know our vehicle has 176 000 kms on the clock but that is peanuts for heavy duty diesel motors and besides the failure was entirely due to poor materials in the oil pump drive system, something the Aussies are well aware of. We had the vehicle METICULOUSLY serviced by trained persons using recommended lubricants at the specified intervals. The whole problem has been exacerbated by the pathetic and exceptionally expensive service by the local Nissan dealers, basically it boils down to the sad fact that we are going to think very seriously about ever touching a Nissan product again.

A couple of things...

In the EU the Navara was fitted with a sliver rocker cover until late 06, the engine was 174bhp. From then onwards a black rocker cover was used and the power was reduced to 171bhp. Sorry, don't know bhp/kw. So you probably had a slightly higher powered engine before it went bang.

Your engine shouldn't have gone after 170k kms, but isn't that on the list of risks you take when you own an 8 year old second hand truck?

Agree that the relatively highly stressed modern diesels in conjunction with Nissan's lack of proper quality control and poor dealers is not a good mix. You are not as badly off as some, a friend had a Renault flatbed thing with the same engine, it went after 2 years and he ended up scrapping it. He still had 2 years finance outstanding.
