Collected my first navara exactly a week ago , an 08 D40 aventura with 39000 miles on the clock . Drove a total of over 550 miles to get it as it was priced to sell. Very happy with it , nice clean truck well looked after and a lovely drive home . Couple of minor issues - it didnt come with a spare wheel as the guy had 2 nicked and didnt replace it for the 3rd time and for some reason the 4WD drive light is constantly on although the switch is pointing to 2WD , should i be worried about this ? and are there any issues i should look out for with an 08 truck ? Any advice is much appreciated SJ

Ok i wont beat around the bush here i have no idea what you`re talking about !! can you explain a little more for me in `stupid man` terms ? does it affect the driving of the truck at all ? cheers SJ

There are three switched located in the transfer case (part of your transmission) these switches get moisture in them and play up (except for later models)

There's a few options, you can remove the switches, clean the internals and refit them with added sealant, or you can replace them with upgraded ones, or you could contact whoever you bought the truck from and see if they'll do the decent thing?

Spoken to the guy who i bought it off and he reckons its done that since the day he bought it without any problems . What i want to know is , is it ok to drive ? it seems to drive fine , if its just the light on the dash then im not bothered but if its going to affect the truck in anyway then ill get it sorted , cheers sj

The guy i bought it off seemed pretty genuine (they all do dont they lol) none of the warning lights with the black out wheels are flashing and as ive said it drives tidy enough . Stupid question i know but how do i tell im in 2WD or 4WD ? Would i `know` if it was in 4WD?

If you've driven it back home for 550 miles and it was in 4WD, you'd have noticed mate, the steering would have been heavy on bends, and you'd have eventually wound the diff up, and broken lots of things

If you put it into 4WD, and just drive it a little way, and turn the steering and you'll know what i mean, with 4WD and the Nav, only use it when you really need to, certainly not on dry tarmac, but a little test will be ok :thumbright:

When you say 4WD light, do you mean the icon in the bottom of the rev counter or a yellow light showing the word 4WD???

well that is the warning light to say the 4wd system has a fault and it shouldnt be on. the display in the rev counter is to show what setting the truck is in.

Like i said you must have a fault for that light to be on, as said most likly the 4wd switches in the transfer box BUT it could be summat more serious.

Well it needs to be sorted, as there quite a few componants in the 4wd system and can be VERY expensive if it goes wrong so best to get the dealer to plug machine into it and see if any faults come up. Would be piece of mind for me if it was my truck and had just layed out alot of hard earned cash for it.

As it stands at the moment you will prob find that the 4wd system wont operate and has prob locked in 2wd as its logged a fault, so you have a vehicle that isnt what you payed for if you see what i mean....I would want it right....but thats my opinion

Oh and as for a spare wheel, keep a look out on ebay for one, theres normally a few on there ;)

Right ive just been out in the nav , turned the key and the 4WD yellow orange light was on in the top left hand corner. Turned the dial to 4WD and it engaged with the 4 wheel diagram showing near where it states the temp. outside , turned the dial to 4WD LO took its time to engage but did with the 4 wheel diagram showing with LO under it , Turned it back to 2WD at first it wouldnt engage but after a little while it did with the 4 wheel diagram showing with the 2 rear wheels blacked out , drove down the road and it stayed on with no sign of the 4WD yellow orange light . Im assuming when the 2WD drive option is selected the 4 wheel diagram with the 2 blacked out rear wheels should be showing at all times yes? Does that make any sense to someone ?

Just keep a eye on it matey, Just becaused the diagram is changing when you turn the 4wd dial doesnt nesseccerly mean that things are engauging/disengauing underneath the truck. esp when the 4wd fault light has been on.

Yes when 2wd drive is selected the two back wheels on the diagram should be blacked out and that diagram should be there at all times, and when other modes are selected then the diagram will change accordingly.

Hi again , thanks for the replies guys. Drove it all day yesterday without any sign of the 4WD light coming on BUT today it came on again .Stopped the truck turned the dial to 4WD HI then to 4WD LO both settings engaged and dis-engaged no problem , turned the dial to 2WD and the 4WD warning light went out and has stayed off since . As you`ve previously posted it sounds like the switches need looking at , my next question is can a general mechanic have a look at these or would it be best to take it to the 4x4 specialist ?
