My little MPG experiment

As some of you know i've been away with the family for a week, and i thought i would change my driving style for the week, to see what difference could be made.
So this is my usual MPG average ....

I never seem to get it any better than this, a combination of my usual trips being short, into town and back, and when out of town, to quote Clarkson, driving like my hair's on fire

So i thought, just for the week, i would 'drive like my nan'. No revs above 2500, no hard acceleration etc, just nice and slow/steady...........and the average at the end of a tank full -

Not too bad i didn't think. The range in the top pic is 386, but i reset the milage trip in the dash to 0 before we left and it was 438 miles when we got back, with 40 to go on the range computer, so i did the best part of 100 miles more than the computer originaly said i could. I know this is only rough, i didn't brim the tank again and work it all out properly, but to get 6.5 ish MPG more, just by changing the way i drive seemed a good result.

Conclusions and comments - FU*K ME, how boring was that, that was very hard work, gritting my teeth and smiling whilst being over taken on the duely bits by minis/mitizs/L200s :pale: :pale:

Back to driving like my hairs on fire first thing :D :D :D

So you only loose ÂŁ2500 per year on a defender?

Even so why not save 2 and a half grand a year lol and just keep the same one
I did tell the old man that, but he likes to keep it new, so he can carry on- I'm just the boy

Yes, he's traded the last 2 in at 1 year old/5000 miles approx, ÂŁ2500 to change, spread over a year, not a massive amount of money, would rather do that than shell out a large amount at 3/4 years old.
I can sort of see where that one is coming from but its still 25 grand every 10 years, might aswell get one keep it for 10 years then buy a new one for 16k or what ever

Sorry probably just me but i can never get my head around people who change the vehicle religiously every 2 yeras and buy exactly the same thing wtih out looking at anything els, know a few people who trade an astra etc in and loose 60% in that time

I guess there's always different ways of looking at things, that's the way we do it :D .
Just a thought, would a new/modern defender still be running every day reliably when it was 10 years old - don't think they're as 'bullet proof' as they used to be :?:

Hmmm looks like i'll have to stick to pushing the button to reset my trip meter & use pen n paper to work out milage :(
The best, most accurate way to calculate MPG in any situation.

I cant help thinking that alot of the D40 owners would be 'upset' if they compared this method to their onscreen display?
Computer is usually about 2mpg out I usually keep an eye on the comp and then on refill set to zero and check by the maths at next fill and I usually get around 35-37mpg by driving sensibly so pretty dam good

I seem to recall i did say something like - ' I know this is only rough, i didn't brim the tank again and work it all out properly.
I believe i also said i wasn't worried about the MPG, it is what it is.

Yes that's correct mate, i understand your experiment was only out of interest, as opposed to taking it 'seriously', so to speak.

My observations are generalised from some of the figures that have been posted in similar MPG threads relating to the D40's fuel consumption, i wasnt pointing to anyone specifically :thumbleft:

My computer has read 2mpg over on my two checks so far, first one said 29.6 and the actual was 27.66, next tank (quiet and twisty roads right up the West of Scotland, along the top and half way down the East coast) computer said 36.1 and the actual was 34.07. That was with a 2011 auto. Dont think I will ever better the 34.07, it was pretty steady going!
