Hi Guys i wonder if someone can help, my wife has just broken down in the navara, she said she was going along doing about 70mph when all of a sudden the power went and when she pulled up at the side of the road it conked out, when she tried to restart it, it would not even turn over.
when i arrived i manage to push it down into a pub car park, when i tried to start it it turned over went to start then nothing, when trying aging it just kept turning over, one thing I did notice was when waiting for the pre heat light to go out the normal pump sound i can hear was not there???? I dont know but would this be the fuel pump, the car has done 66,000 and due a service.
if it is the fuel pump how much am i looking at is it something a novice can do any help please guys would be fantastic.

kind regards
john

Wow I had forgotten about this one. Thanks for getting back to us John. I've re-read the whole thread and it is interesting how we managed to get side tracked on the fuelling.

Another dodgy EGR valve.

Glad you got it sorted :awesomework

I can almost guarantee that will be the erg valve,my 2008 navara ,I was driving at 75mph and it pulled back twice then cut out completely, could'nt even get it to a lay-by,would try to start as if it was only firing on one cylinder, then I made a plate and blanked the egr valve off and it started fine and ran but was over fueling making it have a diesel knock,so brought a new erg valve from euro car parts ÂŁ465.00 plus vat,now it's fine,it has covered 176000 thousand miles with no trouble before this.I have been a mechanic for 48 years and did'nt realise that the erg valve would cut the engine with out any other problems showing, nothing in the memory and no engine light coming on seems quite bizarre to me ?thought it might get me home on limp home mode but no luck.

I thought you weren't supposed to crack of pipes in a common rail?

Though i could be talking ****!

I think you need to find a specialist mate as you could be trouble shooting for weeks and may end up causing other issues if you fiddle with the wrong thing.

Get a cheap obd from eBay and an app for your phone, Android or iPhone and start by reading the fault codes if any.

latest update after charging battery last night I cracked the pipes off of the fuel rail and when turning the engine over there is fuel coming out of all the nuts, which i gues is good news, spoke to a mate today who is a mechanic and he said that i may be a air that has got in the system, he is hoping to come over wednesday to have a look so fingers crossed

I think you need to get a diesel specialist involved at some point as it could take forever to troubleshoot this.

As car as a code reader goes you can get an App on your phone or tablet, some are free with reduced functionality, if you then buy a cheap Bluetooth or wifi obd reader (ELM 327 is one) for between ÂŁ12 and ÂŁ35 depending on which one you go for you can read and clear fault odes and more importantly if you have Dash Command you can see things like fuel flow.

Not bad fora few quid.

I don't think leaving it two years will have caused this issue directly but certainly won't have helped.

I change the oil and filter roughly every 5k usually, air filter at twice that and the fuel filter has been done once since purchase back in Nov 2011.

Have a look on Google for a Bosch specialist in your area.

HI I have just taken the fuel line off where I have added the white line too, which is the smaller line, when taking this line off whith the ignition turned on nothing happens when turning engine over fuel comes out ?

the larger line underneath this line when taken off does nothing when ignition on and nothing when turning over ?

any thoughts would be great

cheers john :(

It'd have to be to the fuel rail.
Crack a pipe joint an see if you have fuel at the rail. I'm still pondering why you have an egr code, it shouldn't affect the fuel flow.
Try the bottle trick if no fuel at the rail, see if the pumps working.
let us know your findings. :awesomework

Still with you here John,

At least we know there is a fault code showing, it may be worth getting an OBD2 reader on it.

You could always set up a temporary separate fuel supply to the filter, to bypass the tank and associated pipework etc.

Ok thanks for that just found the forth fuse box thats upside down what a place to put it I have just check all of those and they are all fine apart from the headlight wash which was blown, I have not found any fuses yet that says its for the fuel pump like in the picture from the link.

Oh and when i filled it up with fuel and took the fuel filler cap off no I dont think there was any suction with the cap.

as far as any fuel pump noise the only pump noise i think I can hear "but not sure" is just after I have tried to start it.

cheers guys

Ok latest update have checked all three fuse boxes " 1 inside, 1 LH engine bay & 1 Rh engine bay" The only fuse i could not see is the 40w fuse on the Lh fuse box right at the rear that was covered in some white stuff but all other fuses ok.

ECU reset start ignition wait 3 seconds pump gas 5 times then there was slight judder from car, wait 7 seconds hold down gas for 10 seconds, then the eml light started flashing in sequences which are as follows
4 fast 9 fast 2 fast then 10 slow " this first one I may of miss counted" then,
4 fast, 10 fast, 3 fast, then 10 slow, then repeated
4 fast, 10 fast, 3 fast, then 10 slow then repeated
4 fast, 10 fast, 3 fast, then 10 slow then repeated
4 fast, 10 fast, 3 fast, then 10 slow.

At this point I realised that this was probably a sequence and tried to start the engine, again the same thing engine turns over but will not fire up.

hmmmm worrying what thesecodes mean now :-(

cheers john
Hi John

The flash codes should start with the slow ones, so with your sequence your code is P0403 (10 flashes =0, i.e. if you have 4 sets of 10 flashes you have no fault code stored)
P0403 is an EGR fault code but unfortunately there ends my knowledge!

Hopefully one of the experts will be along soon :thumbleft:
