Hello All.

I have had my Navara since November and love it! I use it for work and surfing and so far it has been great.

The past few weeks I have started to notice problems. (im no mechanic but have a basic understanding)

1st the hand brake was slipping or so it seemed, then a squeaking noise only when in gear and moving.

I checked the diff oil by putting my finger in and there seemed to be oil in it.

Took the rear wheels and drums off to find them caked in oil. I have read the forum about this and as such proceeded to buy new shoes, 80/90 gear oil and 2 seals all this came to £120.00.

I could not get the hubs off to change the seals at all!! so...
the brakes where cleaned and the shoes on so I could limp it to my local garage where a good friend works to change the seals.

I thought the clean would maybe stop the squeaking noise but it seems to be every time the axle goes round and as I said when in gear and driving along.

Does this sound like the half shafts have gone and is it cheaper/easier for me to fit an 08/09 complete axle to solve the problems that so many seem to have on here. I found one for £450.00 which comes from an 18k 08 model.

hi and welcome!
Definate half shafts, and the 08 axle sounds like a much better bet - you can cure the problem for good by changing the axle, otherwise it will come back.
Dont think it would be too hard to change, take your time and go steady and it should be fine. You can clean the brake parts up in petrol then re-use them i should think, or just swap the whole lot for the newer axle

Hi windowsworld, a bit of topic but where did you buy your brake shoes from? all that stuff you bought seems cheap to me just. cheers.

If your rear drums have been covered in oil, then the half shaft seals have failed. nissan as a warrenty fix will just replace the seals then clean the drums and pads.
3 options

Replace the seals
Replace the half shafts
Replace the whole rear axle, nothing to say the seals wont fail on the 2nd hand axle either.

Last nav the seals failed 4 times before i told them to change the shafts, didnt have another problem, my new nav is a 08, and seals failed at 22k. they replaced the shafts and touch wood all has been fine for the last 38k.

Thank you for your replies I am very grateful!

As for where I bought the parts, Nissan for the seals at £30 a pair. The shoes where £50.00 through a jap pick up specialist on ebay. ( nissan quoted £170.00! a pair, I kid you not!) and the oil is Halfords normal 80/90.

I have bought a complete axel for £450.00 plus £70.00 delivery (Yorkshire to Wales on a pallet overnight)
Apparently it has covered 18k and is an 08 model but I guess that will be difficult to prove for sure.

This arrive tomorrow and then will be fitted Friday so I can get back to work ( i use the Nav for my installs and am lost without it... and its starting to snow again)

I hope this later axle will prove more reliable I shall keep you posted.

Ah yes forgot to add I spoke to Nissan Customer Services UK who checked my VIN no, my August 06 model is not covered by any recall and as it is out of warranty the best they could do is offer 10% of any work I have carried out (at a nissan dealer ) to rectify the fault.

I dont know if I could pursue this further as i really need it back on the road!!.

HEY ALL!

Rear axle has been fitted and all seems to be well.

There was still a squeak from what sounds like the prop shaft, I have given the end of the prop shaft a good squirt of WD40 and this seems to have cued it for now.

Does this sound like a worn UJ to you guys ? if so anyone know any prices for UJ's and are they an easy fit?

Just done the same, £450 is about right but I was lucky paid £200.My original one had done 42k and the diff was knackered,the one I put in had done 8k from a 2007/08 and :clappy: came complete with all the brakes etc,they all looked as new,took just under 2 hours from start to finish,heavy lump though.got some oil from local motor factors Pages,GL5 80W90 EP hypoid. not sure though if this is ok though asI paid £7.00 for 2 ltrs but Nisan want £90.00 anyone put my mind at rest.

Hey Mowerman!

Im afraid I did not fit it myself, It was far too heavy so got my friends at a local garage to do it. 3 hours and all was done.

The axle came complete with good brakes and all seems well now.

Do you know of any issues about UJ's ?? and when they should be changed etc etc ?
