Hi All,

I just thought I would share some pics and info of what I have done to my 2007, D40 for a forthcoming trip to the Sea of Japan (Vladivostok, Russia) via Europe, Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia.

It started out as standard 2007, D40 that I purchased about a year ago. Sadly I was unaware of the potential problems with the chassis and other things like that, but months of lurking enlightened me to these woes and I set about rectifying, upgrading and customising things as I went along.

Some of the things that have been completed so far include:

Duplex timing chain
Engine remap
Hot pipes
Turbo control boost
Breather kit
Front and Rear prop shafts
Complete new suspension (50mm height increase)
New front bumper
Winch
New rear bumper with swingouts
Sliding tray for the tub
Reinforced lid for tub
Roof tent
Roof rack
Dual battery system
Low coolant level alarm
Engine overheating alarm
40ltr water tank and pump fitted
Additional 12v and USB sockets
Replaced alloys with steelies
Chassis strengthening brackets
Electric actuators for the lid
Complete underbody protection
Snorkel (which reminds me I need to remove the vent from the back of the cab and block it up. Otherwise water will flow right in!!

I have just today changed all the fluids and brake pads/shoes and am just waiting for a few sunny days, so that I can clean down the chassis and rustproof it.

Some pics from what she looked like to now...

Thanks and yea the tank is for water/shower etc. Some parts of my trek I'll be like 3-4 days away from civilisation, so had to fit an additiaonal 40ltr water tank, plus 20ltr on the bumper.

Will be carrying an extra 40ltr fuel on the roof too.

Hi There,

Yep got the winch and front bumper from West Coast. I got the rear bumper via West Coast from a company in Portugal called AFN...took forever to get here, slower then the bumper from Aus!! I also got an Ironman 275amp Dual Battery system from West Coast too.

Cheers,
Rads.

Nice build Rads - but then I've already mentioned that over on UKOL :)

Thanks, but we'll see how it works in the real world of Mongolia, Kazakhstan and far eastern Russia...lol

Some friends asked why on earth I had a winch, I'm like well I'm solo, no bugger else is going to get me out of the mire!!

I forgot to add that my main reason for taking the rear seats out were not only to house water tank and pump etc, but I'm travelling with my 4 year old Alaskan Malamute dog - it doubles as his bed.

In fact, when I drove for 10 hours up to Scotland for Xmas, I realised that Dexter was not so comfortable on the back seats, so I thought I would make him a bed for the 20,000 mile trek. He got a bed and I got water storage and pump lol :)

Meet my co-driver, Dexter Wolf getting ready for Siberia :)

No one else has said it so I will. "Mad as a box of frogs!" :rockon

Respect though Rads, one he'll of an adventure. Is the answer to the question, because you can or because it's there. Have a good one!

Hi Mate

I spotted your truck at the Mongolia border. You may have spotted our navara at the same time. Found it quite strange as I remember reading your posts here and then seeing the truck at the same day and same time as us at the border. I must say yours looks well more kitted out then ours.

Anyway, we made it to UB.. Just.

We had suffered

1. Fuel Tank strap Snapped, nearly game over in Kazakhstan, we ended up strapping it up using a ratchet strap to the roof rack.
2. Fuel Filler Neck Bracket Snapped, Noisey banging since Russia.
3. Turbo stopped working, we think we had a leak somewhere

It sounds like you've had a really interesting time, looking forward to the full story with pictures of course. :awesomework

Great thread. Can't wait to read both trip reports. Either of you thinking about journalling it or putting it into a book? 1 man and his dog over landing sounds like an awesome read!!
