hey all, well its me again with yet another problem, you may remember that in February I had the timing chain on my 2006 D40 changed - all was going good until nearly home tonight and I noticed that when I was slowing down in traffic she was making a noise - like something was loose but as soon as I started speeding up the noise went, noticed it a few more times on way home, when I got home I took the top engine dust cover off but could not see anything loose, I revved her up and she didn't sound too clever, sounds like the timing chain is doing something untoward, she's missing slightly not regular but missing on tick over now and then randomly - there also seems to be rather a lot of oil at each end of the intercooler pipes - when I took the hose pipe off which goes to the metal concertina like part (three segments) going toward the turbo there seems to be a gathering of oil there not gallons but a bit more than Id like to see ---- any way when you rev her up she sounds ok - you rev her hard she sounds fine the turbo sounds good without the pipe off I was talking about - whistling like a Trojan I just don't know -- put the pipes back on and hold her at about 2500 revs she's as good as gold, below that well - as I explained --- help help help maybe I should have brought a Mi****ishi

Could it be that silly alternator pulley clutch set up breaking up? As the chains have already been done :dunno

Who did the chains ?
Try dropping the belts off and as Woz says, check the pulley's and bearings.
There's been reported noises from worn belts where metal studs in the belts have been found to be noisy, inspect the belts thoroughly and replace them if your unsure.

I'll be very surprised if its the chains/tensioner if billcar have done them

Well got to work half way here the noise started again - keep the revs up no noise let them drop and its back help
Stop driving it until the problem has been sorted, you could cause a lot of damage.

Who change the timing chain before?

are we talking a distinct rattle or a faint rattle? mine has a very faint rattle if i hold the throttle at a neutral pace with the speed, no over-run nor accelertating!

alright guys the vehicles off the road, thwaites garage in portslade did the timing chain they have been there for donkeys and are very reputable, its hard to explain the noise not so much a rattle as a oh tell ya what when the revs drop down its like a large piece of plastic has dropped and is rubbing along the road, rev her up and it stops until the revs drop below 2000 then its almost like switching it on, I started her up yesd when I left work to go to the garage and again after a bout three seconds on tickover the noise just went until the engine gets warm then is back -- all the time you doing over 30 miles an hour its not there its only when you drop below that this plastic dragging along the road noise starts again

The Turbo's always leak a fair bit of oil into the intercooler pipes in these engines.
