I can't believe in 2006 the Navara still had drum brakes on the rear. So my question is is there an up grade to disc or another diff that bolts straight in? And the ratio seems to be very low.

It's 2020 and still several pickups are fitted with rear drums.
No, there is no diff that will drop in, you would need to do the front too anyway.
The easiest way to increase the gearing is to fit bigger tyres.
