Satnav reversing camera without navtv?

Found the problem - a school boy error! I had earthed the camera through the backbody (like I had done with the reversing sensors, which do work, albeit they are rubbish). It is not a very good earth, I now realise, so earth directly from the reverse lamp wire to the body). Having had a quick read on here, it seems that this earth problem is often a fault for things not working, including towbar wiring.

So, both cameras do indeed work. The new one is bigger and not as ergonomic - about 23mm wide. As I didnt want to drill a hole before I knew it all works, I have mounted it through a piece of mahogany - nice. Reverse bling?

The actual camera works very nice - this pick is as light is fading. The red bar represents a distance of a1 ft off denting something.

Shorting the extra wires from the underseat CD nav unit puts the camera on even when not in reverse, maybe usefull occaisionally

So, I'm pleased. I will add a bit more and some photos when I have time.

To add on to what is already on here, if I was to do this again....

I would first earth the rear tub to chassis!
Instead of taking all the displays & CD driver to pieces and soldering, I am sure it is possible to just add female pins to the appropriate empty slots in the plugs. These are available by dissecting a SOT conversion cable. Then, no soldering, neater and really would be a 2 hours to do the lot.

If all this remains working, I have a spare SOT cable and a night vision camera

Good job, I especially like the mahogany mount :D

I've been looking through the rs components website (they're just around the corner from me) looking at getting the 3 sets of plugs & sockets and making up a loom set, would then be a case of plug & play.
They have male pins but I can't see female pins :?
If I can work out the correct parts, it would total less than ÂŁ20 with 2-3 hours work making the looms.

Well done again :thumbleft:

I reckon I've found all the parts at RS

Navi box unser drivers seat
40 way plug
40 way socket
32 way plug
32 way socket

Display
24 way plug
24 way socket

crimps

All the sockets are for mounting on a pcb but they could have the right angle snipped and soldered.

2 looms could be made using the above parts that connect between the 3 connectors concerned and that contain the shorting wire for the Navi box and a camera socket for the display. (several hours work making up the looms). Would be plug & play and could be removed when desired, all for less than ÂŁ20.
OR
do like TSEJ says and just use 4 crimps into the existing plugs to provide the short and camera socket, much simpler and much quicker, ÂŁ5.50 for 100 crimps

TSEJ
how did you crimp the crimps? do you have a proper crimping tool or did you just use pliers and brute force?
and do the crimps just push into the plug?

At last, some photos. Some are borrowed from other sites, I cant remember details though.

First - If you go down the route (which I think is best) for just adding pins to the sockets after dissecting a SOT cable, here is a pic of where the numbers for the pins are on the socket;

However, if you are crazy and go down the opening the disc box up and doing soldering, here are the pics

The sat nav screen is much the same,

I'm hopefully getting a 58 plate Nav next week and have been looking at reverse camera options, can you explain a little more exactly how the sot lead option could be done (I'm no electronic whizz so soldering is a no go really, but I can tweak lead and unplug and plug in) I think if I tried soldiering the cd/DVD and screen it would be useless once I was done!!

this method works perfect, just done my o7 nav, mounted cam under handle on bootlid, downside is you need to drill hole in rear hatch for the cables to run
thanks all

If you dissect out the sockets from a SOT lead without damaging them (ie file away the plastic casing), these can then be pushed into your navara plug sockets for the screen and DVD driver under the seat. This means no soldering. On the plastic plugs, you notice that only a few of them actually have wires coming out - the pins required for this mod do not have any, hence you need to create them yourself, either by solder directly onto the panel, or as I suggest, adding the wire in the socket yourself.
You will need to identifiy the correct hole in the plug of course - easy, but will require studying the diagram above and maybe taking the unit apart (then you can report back for others) Sorry, I didnt think to write it down at the time as I was soldering and only came up with this idea after looking at a SOT lead.

Hope that makes sense!

Well done for everyone else who has done it.

Hi, can someone help, Im a little confused, the terms. 1 & 67 that need linking, do they stay in the plug and are just linked or do they need removing from the plug and linking? I won't bother links terms. 5 & 65 as I only want it to come on when in reverse, and I get the video input on the screen that's fine

Any help would be great

Thanks

Sorry to dig this up again

but can any one point me in the direction of a sot lead that will plug into the DVD drive and screen or crimp sockets that will fit into the original plastic socket.

Thanks. :thumbleft:

I've just done this and it also works well. To work around the soldering issue (opened the box and had a look; those pins are small and my eyesights not that good and my hands shake) so tried the pin option as others have mentioned. I bought a cheap male-female VGA lead from a computer shop and the pins in the female plug are the right size, if you carefully disect the female plug the wires are aleady soldered to the pins. The pins then just push into the plugs on the nav unit and display.
