Should I buy a Navara

Hi Everyone,

Just joined this site as I was hoping someone would be kind enough to offer some advice.

I am thinking of buying a Navara Tekna 2018. I've owned literally loads of 4x4's over the years, along with one other pick up, that being a 2015 Hilux Invincible. A nice enough vehicle, but a bit too industrial for me. Im trying to find something I can use for an everyday vehicle and for work. I only want an auto, whatever I decide on must have a good spec, with leather, heated seats, sat nav etc. I regularly have to travel into Wales as my partners Mother isn't well, so it needs to be good for long journeys and fairly economical.

My current vehicle is a luxury SUV, obviously I'm not going to find a pick up that will match the spec/handling/economy, but something that came close would be nice.

You are all (probably rightly) thinking, this guys looking for something that doesn't exist, and you're probably far more knowledgeable than I, that being said any advice would be vert welcome.

Finally. I've been told by an acquaintance that Nissan's warranty is rubbish, and even though they offer 5 years, they literally try and wriggle out of any claim?

Thank you in advance!

Unicorn hunting!

I don't think the pickup market outside of the US is ready for a decent spec vehicle.

Saying that, my V6 Navara is pretty close but the newest are 2015.

The Merc X350 is probably what you want (Navara with a Merc V6 and a few tweaks). Silly money though.

The D23 Navara is far more car like than the Hilux and good on fuel, but still feels like a pickup.

Nissan dealers aren't like Toyota, some are really bad, but there are plenty of good ones around.

Does a 2018 Tecnya sound a good, reliable voice then?

"it needs to be good for long journeys and fairly economical"
Not sure what you would class as economical coming from a luxury SUV, but for me fuel consumption has been my one disappointment in the Navara. No matter how gently I drive I cannot get more than 28-29 mpg in normal daily driving. I once got 32 on a long drive back from Newcastle but that was a one off. The E class estate that I swapped for the Navara would easily get over 40mpg on a motorway run.

That has absolutely not been my experience. I have had loads of warranty work, including a new engine, with barely a question asked. There's never been any suggestion of wriggling out. I suppose it may depend on the dealer and I may have been lucky, though I didn't even buy it from them.

As mentioned frequently on this forum, the two recurring issues with this age of Navara are the bottom radiator hose rubbing on one of the pulleys and eventually wearing through, and oil leaks from the turbo pipework. Both should be fixed under warranty.

I'd generally agree with the comments above from other contributors.

I have a tekna auto, comfortable, relatively reliable, not bad on mpg, about 33 but i do more motorway than local miles.

Dealers generally been ok, front brakes needed replacing more often than i'd expect. Mine is not the facelift which has discs all round, 66 still has drum brakes at rear, dont know if that may contribute to more front disc wear.

93k, not had too many issues relative to any other vehicle i've owned.

We all buy vehicles for our own reasons, for me its 3 young kids, two good sized dogs and alot of gear to move on long trips. The navara does it all with ease and in any weather, did put 60k miles on a touareg so knwo a comfy suv when i see one but dont worry you soon adjust to the navara and actually pretty decent ride (for a pickup). Did make a divider for the rear compartment, which works well to keep dogs safe, while maximising load space.

Noticed another thread about undersealing and may consider doing that in near future, so depending on mileage/age you may too.
