Hi Folks,
First post on here so be gentle with me. I'm looking at buying a D40 08 Long Way Down, 31k, Canopy fitted, leather etc. Dealer wants 12.5k which doesn't seem too far away from what similar are selling for. Took it for a test drive and detected a real rattle coming from the engine under load. In my ignorance I thought it might be a loose exhaust heat shield or something but after reading Rislars excellent guide to buying a D40 I now believe it to be a problem with the injectors. Dealer is going to look at it / fix it hopefully but now I'm having doubts. Should I buy it if they fix it? Will it re-occur? Is it a case of once a rattler always a rattler? :) From what others have said it sounds like an expensive job. Has anyone had the injectors replaced and done significant mileage without reoccurrence?

Thanks in advance.

Andy

VAT not included so ÂŁ14687 all told. I get the VAT back though. The Service history only seems to indicate the sales service from the dealer! The one that Sheepy has shown above looks good though. Now even more confused. ;)

Hi there, I've got a 08 long way down, its had the injectors and a clutch changed before it was a year old, and I'm not sore on the clutch. Its like all motors, you can get a good one or a bad one. This is my 3rd nav and I've got a new tenka on order, god knows when I'll get it, ordered in june.
Dealer offered me ÂŁ12,500+vat in June with 23,000 mls on the clock and it has 27,000 mls now. If your going for the long way down I would get the dealer to do the injectors before you take the nav, as long as its been serviced properly.
Is there a mileage down on the service history. Their intervals are every 18,000 mls.

Davy - Thanks for the info. The only stamp I could see is the one from last week when the dealer serviced it when it came in. I'll check again when I test drive it again on Friday to see if the rattle has been fixed. So after getting the injectors replaced has it happened again or does it fix the problem for good?

Hello mate. Make sure they actually did the service they say they've done, i've just had a set to with a garage, main dealer(not nissan), where i've just bought the wife a car, 2 years old. Yes sir, full service before you take delivery said the salesman, you won't need anything done for 12 months, 3 weeks later, got a letter, service reminder  - they hadn't done it at all, must have forgot to tell the service department though, caught the buggers out there !!!

The nissan warranty will be null and void based on this then unless they have done 13000 miles in the last week

That's also what I'm worried about. The dealer is throwing in an extra 4 months of warranty to cover a full year as the manufacturers warranty runs out in July 11 so I might need to get them to give me the full year if the manufacturers warranty is void. With the big caveat that the warranty will need to cover the same items as the manufacturers.

So, have spoken to the dealer. The head technician reckons it's not a problem with Injectors, but the beginning of the Dual Mass Flywheel going. Does that sound the same as Injectors? Or similar even? Because I was convinced (based on what I read on here) that the injectors were the problem. I have also asked them about the warranty being void. They reckon they can "work around that". The bottom line is they will not repair it until I've bought it - then I wait a couple of weeks and bring it in and get the work done under warranty. (Which may or may not exist). Also spoke to the original owner - he advised there was no problems with it whilst he had it (other than being noisy). My every instinct tells me to walk away. Am I being too cautious?

Listen to your instincts, they are usually right! It just sounds like you are going to give yourself a whole lot of hassle, I certainly wouldn't be buying it before they had it sorted for you, seems a strange way to do it!?
Better off spending your time having a wee drive down to see that one dejongj is selling, it looks pristine and has been well looked after. (And no I'm not on commission!!)
