Towing really heavy stuff - any pointers?

Hi all!

I would guess a lot of you guys have a fair bit of experience with towing with your Navaras and Pathfinders. I have never driven with more than about 500kg on a small trailer, and tomorrow I will be towing 3 tonnes worth of powerboat which is a bit out of my comfort zone!

Is there anything special to consider with such a heavy load, besides making sure it is properly stuck to the trailer?

Thanks :) I thought the covered trailer we used when we moved into our apartment was big, but this was something else entirely! Not made easier by the fact that we finished loading it up at 4.15pm, just in time for the afternoon rush hour through town. I think we ****** off a few commuters on the way through various round-a-bouts ;)

In the UK the drawbar is not included in the length and also the load is allowed to project out over the back of the trailer by an amount of upto 2m

Hence in that trailer, everything in front of the Bow Support strut, is in effect a drawbar.

Furthermore for indivisible loads like boats the following applies

However, if the trailer is constructed and normally used for carrying an ‘indivisible load of exceptional length’ such as a boat, then
- the overall length of the towing vehicle must not exceed 9.2m, and;
- the overall length of the combination of vehicle and trailer must not exceed 25.9m including any projection of the load; if it does, then the police must be warned in advance and an assistant must be carried.

Hence the OP would be completely legal in the UK , once the Gross train weights were OK.

Originally I was going to buy a Navara, but couldnt tow a 3000Kg boat with it legally , thats why I got the RR, Since seen sense ( and sold teh boat)

I was stopped twice in France and weightbridged and measured.
