Looking at some of the posts in this section various people have said they don't work.

I recently fitted one, mid range response is much better and fuel consumption improved by 5mpg.

Interested to see what the panel think.

I have now used my box since Friday/Saturday....Previously on my EuroIV I got an average of 21.4mpg...Now I am following a combination of 4H in the snow, 3 days of London traffic and a trip to the New Forest I am doing 28.9mpg  This is better than I expected for my ÂŁ75 ebay special with potentiometer, considering I'm doing about 24k per annum that is a substantial saving...

Thats exactly what I get - 21.4!
I am suddenly much more interested!
How long will it take you to recover the ÂŁ75 in fuel saved?
Based upon my 24k miles per annum and 99.9p / liter fuel it will take me to recover the ÂŁ75 20.56 days  Which equates to a ÂŁ1322.93 saving per annum on diesel! And this is because I drive I like I stole it, as you drive much slower  you might be able to get over 30 mpg....On the motorway doing 80 exactly the instant gauge is at the top....

Sure I know these figures are based on the obc, but since the baseline of 21.4 is also based on the obc the yield is still valid...The actual consumption may of-course differ, but relatively it will be the same...

how can i drive slower than you if I get the same MPG?
That line was just a daft flippant joke of mine, apologies :)

I must admit that I am really suprised, hence my thread on whether they are really the same with just some different "lipstick" on them.

In the long thread before the crash I though the concensus was that the digital ones are better, and that those with a screw (potentiometer) should be avoided. Well in my experience that is not the case, but I don't have something to compare against. Hence my suggestion for a shootout. Although that won't really do mpg ofcourse.

All I know is that I have a relative improvement in mpg of 7.5mpg for a mere investment of ÂŁ75. That's pretty good in my experience.

have you had any problems with your going into safe mode?
None what so ever, saying that I did read the instructions and took some care in tuning it to perfection. It was stated that the box came with the screw in the middle, 10 full turns from the lowest setting. I must admit that that didn't do much for me at all. So I upped it carefully with 2 full turns, drove down the b-road, down the A5 to the M1 and did a stretch there...But nothing much yet, and in my mind I was starting to get ready to use the 7 day no quibble return. Then I opened it up again and thought lets do a full wack of 4 full turns...And wow that was more like it, now I noticed it working there was a real surge present. But in order to get it right I upped it a further two turns and I was disappointed, there was something there but it wasn't very smooth, just didn't feel efficient...So I started bringing it down by half turns until it was spot on again!

Now for each of those changes I did the same trip, and during the trip I made certain I included full accelleration, full kickdown, ingear acceleration...But at no point was the safe mode triggered.....

Perhaps not the most scientific way of doing it, and much more time-consuming than a rolling road...But it seemed to work for me.....As you are close to me I'm happy to help you out Mowerman....

Oh and for the record I have no affiliation at all with the ebay supplier of my little box....

Ok I have installed today my el-cheapo from Ebay which is traced back to this website http://www.ukdiesel.co.uk/ but I only paid ÂŁ75 for it. At first I didn't think it did anything, although the MPG started to creep up. Then I upped the power a little, and then a bit more and all of a sudden...Wow!

I've driven about 150 miles today, and the car seems to have a constant surge going on now. My wife calls it Murano-esque as that car has the effect of a powerboat....There seems to be no to very little lag now and a very constant firm push....But even more impressive is that I have gained an 20% improvement in economy. No matter what I did I couldn't get my EuroIV above 21.4 mpg, now after I driven it like I stole it and a large part in 4h mode I'm averaging 25.9 and still going up....So even without the power I would be happy with that for just ÂŁ75....

Now I really want to do that shoot-out day, the MPG is real...But I just want to make certain that the power experience is real and not in my head...I want to measure it

Is this the one?

No you are not.

I can take a picture of the box, but it is just a black box with an db9 connector on the side, a flat bottom plate with 4 screws and on the top an led that goes green when the power is switched to acc and you have connected it properly. When you open is up there is like a sealed layer in the box only revealing the screw of the potentiometer. That's it.

Looks very very similar to your box exept that it a a skoity surface.

I've done just over 1000 miles with my el-cheapo box now. The fuel consumption improvements has been beyond my expectations, but something changed last night....

After a few days driving normally I was getting bored of it :) So I put my foot down again....Just meeting my mate who was driving up north to deliver Bob's package and the engine note changed, previously there was that diesel rattle and all of a sudden it was quiet and very refined almost like a petrol and still had all the pull....Don't know what happened there....Anyway on the way back from having a ruby, I thought I show him what my Nav can and floored it at the light, great at going off, shifted up two gears and then in third around 4000 rpm the power was gone...I just didn't have anything anymore, but no engine management light came on...A quick restart and all was back to normal....

I'm wondering why did it all work so well the first 1000 miles, the only parameter that has changed is the outside temperature.....Which has increased significantly....Am I experiencing this 'need to change the settings' that some people been reporting? Hmmm....Ah well I need to get 10 more days of good economy in order to break even with the costs, perhaps not put my foot down in that period. Than I might try out something else as well and see how consistent that is....

This is the same problem I have with mine

Have fitted the replacement box and all was ok for about the first 500miles mainly motorway fuel consumption improved and mid range performance as well, very happy. :) On a normal local trip to work I put my foot down and lost power just managed to get truck in to nearside lane and carried on JUST. :( I got to work and adjusted down by two turns and so far OK again but not so much mid range punch. :?

I am not convinced yet that these units are the best way to go and I am looking at interested at the other threads regarding units that seem to be designed to suit this engine.

Will keep unit on and see what happens. Off this weekend with the caravan should be a good test. :salute:

Yes I'm gonna do a trial with something else....Especially as I will be going with around 2.2Tonne on tow across the Alps this summer I need something reliable....I've just done a little test and it seems ok for now having turned it down two notches....Tomorrow morning I'm booked in at AutoStylingUK so I make a nice long run and see how it behaves...Of to the boatshow in Birmingham there after :partycheer:

Was going NEC but will only spend money. We are off over the Alps in August with new caravan that should turn up end of March :partycheer:

Excellent! We are going similar time...A couple of weeks at Lake Garda, then perhaps another at Geneva on the way back, we haven't really planned the way back yet....I'm going to the NEC to see if I can get a good deal on a boat like with the Navara, otherwise I will have to go pre-owned....

Now after a while running with it, it needs adjusting again. When I put my foot down to speed up on the motorway a lost all power. Not a good moment! And on the comparison test it looks like the box is fooling the obc for the fuel consumption when measuring the fillups. So much for it, I am awaiting a response from the seller. The truck now feels the same in power as standard, and actually manages to use more fuel, and goes into safe mode when going up above 4k revs. Still don't get it how it worked for the first week so well.
