This from Billcar;

It has come to our attention at Billcar Engineering that D40 YD25DDTI engines 2005 - are suffering with lower timing chain problems. The single row chain fitted from new is under to much stress.

We advise customers with engines 60,000 miles upwards to consider having a duplex timing chain modification conversion.

Nissan will only honour that warranty if the vehicle has been serviced by them. The only time they will do anything is if it is so obviously a problem such as poor performance or catastrophic failure.

The warranty is not public knowledge and is at Nissan's discretion. Their replacement parts will still be the inferior simplex chain that causes the problem in the first place. They will try to wriggle out of any responsibility given the potential costs to them.

The chain stretches and gives very little hint that it is about to fail. If you own a D40 that has over 60k miles, I would strongly advise you pay for the upgrade as supplied by Billcar.

and doesnt this come under nissan call back?
No, as I said above, the 93K mile warranty extention is a secret, there is NO recall.

My 2011/61 plate just had a new timing kit fitted at 39900 miles! Was whining its head off! It was 2 days out of warranty and Nissan wouldnt do it! After a bit of reading up I could have had a duplex one fitted for much cheaper from a guy in Newcastle for ÂŁ900 after iv just paid ÂŁ1400 for the same rubbish that it came out the factory with.

At least you have a genuine quality chain. That duplex kit would be a cheapy off ebay or similar. Not worth the risk at all. :adminfinger

I didn't say the Ebay one was ****, I said it was not worth risking for the sake of a couple of hundred quid.

The d22 was fitted with both chains being duplex, so Billcar use genuine Nissan D22 parts along with an adapted/modified vacuum pump.

Hi just noticed the post, can I ask who would have done the work in Newcastle for 900?
I'm approaching needing a replacement as on 53k and live in teesside, Newcastle is much closer than billcar in Shrewsbury.

cheers

Oh dear here we go again, it's not specifically true that when your Navs done 60k it needs the timing chain done, yes some have had issues but a lot haven't !!!!! Mine had done over 100k before I had it done at billcar. And it would have probably gone on for another 100k without issue. Lots of others have high mileage trucks still on the original chains. Some people on this site recommend you having it done and I for one aren't trying to tell you differently, it's peace of mind in lots of instances , but just because itps done nearly 60k doesn't mean it needs replacing. There is way too much scare mongering going on with this issue in my opinion

And the good news is someone has come up with a simple method of investigating the condition of the lower chain without actually stripping the whole front of the engine. :awesomework
