can someone please tell me how you will know if its a euro 3 or 4?
Lift the bonnet, you will see a big plastic cover on top of the engine, under that cover is a metal rocker cover, if it's silver it's a Euro 3, if it's black it's a Euro 4

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

Hi am seriously considering buying a D40 Navara approx. 2005 or 2006 double cab model, is there any advise you can give me when buying this vehicle? ie at what mileage do the major services take place, any common problems to look out for and lastly I have heard rumours of major engine failures in this model, is there any truth in this?
Any comments welcomed as I am lusting after one of these vehicles, cheers :)

All the different model D40's have their pros and cons, but Euro 4's are thirstier than Euro 3's. Euro 3's can have some issues that were more or less sorted by Euro 4.

An 07 could be a Euro 3 or Euro 4

If it has a silver rocker cover it's a Euro 3, if it has a black rocker cover it's a Euro 4

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

Thanks for all the info...Today we test drove a new Tekna Navara which has currently come on offer at the Stealers. The deal seems good with an On the road price of 24 Grand inc VAT, which, compared to the VW Anorak is a bargain.Just a bit of advice from your good selves before we take the plunge as to its suitability for our use.The vehicle we choose will be doing a lot of miles, Both motorway and A roads, slighty loaded. Two or three times a month she will be required to tow at its max weight level and do light off roading once or twice a month. My concern is that the warranty is only up to 60,000 miles which we will probably hit after about 18 months of owner ship.I have priced an extended warranty at ÂŁ899 a year. Im torn between the Isuzu Eiger which at the moment has a few offers on but more importantly 125000 mile warranty or 5 years..I have not owned a Nissan in any format before and as such seek any sensible comments or observations which may be relevant. Many Thanks

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

Hi

Im still in the market to buy a Navara i will be looking at a 2010 - 2012 Tekna im thinking.
Got a question I have been told by a mechanic friend of mine to not buy one as they are well known for throwing pistons through the side of the engines due to to much power and when people took them into the dealers for services etc the dealers were plugging them in and de tuning them to save the engines going on them ?

Is there any truth in this or have i been given some wrong info?

Gaz

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

He's talking out his ass, some early D22's had issues with the bottom end throwing pistons threw the blocks, and some early D40's had clutch issues which is when some may have been dealer tweaked to reduce the stress on the clutch, if your looking at 2010 onwards these issues won't affect you, have a search on here you will find lots of pointers and explanations of things to look for

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

Haha yeah he did say the early models which i thought he meant early d40 but now you said that maybe he meant the d22's.
So i should have no probs with 2010 on wards hopefully fingers crossed.

Hi Guys and Girls, I m looking to change my d22 king cab for a newer king cabmodel , , Unfortunatley it seams the spec level is low in the KING CABS compared to dcabs, ie leather sat nav etc, could someone let me know what models and spec are available in King cab , and if there transferable from second hand crew cab.. Also what was changed on the 2010 models? i understand they have more horsepower, but what other mods were there? thank you in antissipation ;-)

Trim level and specifications are different for different countries. Are you in the UK and is it a D22 or D40 you are looking for?

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

Sory, Im in the Norf East of England (Redcar if any one`s close) and looking for a D40 , King cab (need big bed to carry motorcycles etc) ,I`d posibly stretch to a damaged 2010 + model, {as i understand they have more power} . hence wanting to know what parts, paticualy body panels were changed from previous D40 model..
What ever i get will have a suspention lift, 70pc off road tyres, snorkel, tow, light bar`s and winch/bumper and protection bars fitted,
Sat nav, sound`s,hands free, and leather are also on the wish list ,std or dafter market ,
Any pics and build`s,supliers and knowlage, I would be greatfull if you could please direct me ,

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

As far as I am aware the only difference in the newer models body is the front bumper, headlamps and grill.

These companies are both forum sponsors and will possibly give you a discount.

As for trim level, you will be best to judge each vehicle and its trim as you come across them.

The Euro 5 190 2010 onwards Navara has more power and is more fuel efficient although the older ones are no slouch either though.

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

Th Mk2 D40 - 2010 Onwards have the following changes (from memory)

External - Revised front bumper, headlights, grille, bonnet and headlight washers. Folding door mirrors now fitted (not sure if all models get them).

Revised interior - Centre console and gear lever surround, revised dials. Connect Pack had revised Sat Nav (inc Postcode) reverse parking camera, hard drive and iPod interface. Touchscreen controlled, plays DVD's.

Tekna models lost sunroof and elec passenger seat but not straight away as stock filtered out i would guess.

V6 model introduced, similar spec to Tekna but with V6 3.0 Engine, 7 speed auto and bose stereo. Also retained sunroof but still lost elec seat on passenger side.

Traction Control fitted across range.

Rear cupholders removed!

Cant think of anything else.

Also see here.

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

Traction controwl ,do you know if that selects 4x4 automaticaly and also do away with the Limited slip diff? :?:
is it the type where the ABS nips a disk if the wheel is spinning ? ,
It is king cab im looking for, speck`s seams low compared to crew cab :(
Thank you for the help info and link :thumbright:

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

Hi brilliant guide, i read through all posts and failed to see any infor on the rear axel and locking issues that the d40 may or may not have, are these just rumours? Also can anybody help with the spec differances between the d40 models? Im currently in the market for an 05-07 d40 with a budget of about 6k? My only preference is a manual double cab, im unsure what you get with the different models of the d40

Thanks

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

The early pre 2007 d40s had softer driveshafts which wear at the axle end seals causing diff oil to contaminate the brakes. Not all suffer from it and the easy fix is to fit an axle from a later model. To be honest, you mat as well check them all for oil contamination around the rear brake drums.

The Aventura is the highest spec with leather, satnav, etc. The Outlaw has only slightly lower spec but may have leather or satnav depending on the customers requirements at original purchase.

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

Im thinking of buying a Navara my budget is around ÂŁ7k i need reliability i have read lots online about halfshafts and rear axles being cheese but have not seen much on the forum about it, is it just an issue on particular model or age truck or luck of the draw?
any recommendations on engine trim etc. to look for?

Dave

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

Some Navs from 05 (55 plate) upto around 07 were more prone to halfshaft failure.

There have been the odd later model with the issue but, predominently it's the earlier ones.

Re: D40, a few pointers (buying, bought or thinking of buyin

TIMING CHAIN
There has been a lot of talk about stretching and failing lower timing chains recently. The upshot is that it should be inspected at every service from around 54k miles and changed if there is any hint of stretching. It may be worthwhile adding it in to the main service schedule to be changed anyway at higher mileages.

Any timing chain replacement MUST be a genuine Nissan one, we have seen a number of aftermarket kits fail very shortly after installation (within a year). An upgraded kit (using Nissan parts) is available from Billcar.

EDIT August 2016. It appears that the 190 or facelift model from 2010 has a different quality single row lower chain that is still prone to stretching but is less likely to snap.

RUST
We are starting to see some older D40s with severely weakened chassis due to rust or corrosion. The protection applied at the factory will wear off very quickly allowing the chassis to corrode. It will be well worth inspecting the chassis closely especially the rear behind the cab area.

EDIT August 2016. Nissan are starting to offer victims of chassis failure either a trade-in against a new truck, a buy back at market value or a re-chassis. This is NOT a recall and is being done on the assessment of individual cases by the dealer network.
