Hi, I just want to warn you that you can very easily get locked out.

Last week I opened my drivers door, started the engine, got out my ice scraper, closed drivers door, cleared ice from screen, went to open door, all doors locked. Engine running, lights on, me stood outside.

I have had my 59reg back to Nissan today, they have checked it and say that, it is normal for a Navara. I will take this up with Nissan.

I have tried to recreate the fault by locking doors via the key fob, with the drivers door open, then turn on the ignition and start it up. As you turn the ignition the doors click as if they have unlocked. Close the drivers door & try to reopen, the doors are locked ( did this with the window down, so I could unlock and get back in).

This is a first for me in 24years of driving.

I do not think you should be able to lock your keys in your truck when you have started it with the doors open.

Re: *CAUTION* Lock out with my engine running

You sure you didnt catch the door lock button by the gear stick before you got out? maybe to grab the ice scraper? or pressed the button on the fob when you started the engine???

navs have been know to have dodgey doors locks that sometimes DONT lock when the button is pressed on the fob, but not heared of the doors locking when engine running.....

One guy locked his keys in the ignition once, but his misses had been cleaning around the gear stick and hit the door lock button, so the doors had locked and when it shut the drivers door it was locked.......

The nissan alarm systems isnt the best out there

Re: *CAUTION* Lock out with my engine running

just been out to my nav now bud. Opened drivers door. pressed button on key fob so doors lock. started engine, heard a click like doors opened. closed drivers door (with windows open, just in case) and all doors are locked!!!!

Must have somehow caught the lock button on the fob before you started the engine.....

Learn summat new about the nav everyday!

Re: *CAUTION* Lock out with my engine running

Thanks for your replies.

I could have caught the lock button when starting the engine, but I think the fact the drivers door was open and then closed should have unlocked the door, I think this is a big design flaw. Nissan think this is OK...

I have been in touch with Nissan customer service, re my D40 locking me out.

Nissan said that they are happy that Navaras will lock you out, with you engine running.

I put forward a strong case, questioning them how can they have designed a car that will lock you out after you have started without you ever getting in it. They said it was design intent and the locking issue would not be looked in to unless more people complained.

Please consider how easily you could get locked out. What if you get locked out after you have strapped your child in to a car seat and you spare key is 3 hours away and RAC can not get to you for 2 hours. Do you smash a window and scare you child further??

Have a go and see how easily you could get locked out.

With the drivers door open, press the lock button on your key, then turn on the ignition and start it up. As you turn the ignition the doors click as if they have unlocked. Close the drivers door & try to reopen, the doors are locked ( do this with the window down, so you can unlock and get back in).

Make sure that your window is down when you test it.

Complain to Nissan if yours works in the same way as mine.

I look forward to seeing your post, with your results.

I've had more cars like that...But effectively it is user error isn't it as you have to press the button....

But to avoid that error, I always leave my drivers window down when I leave my keys in the ignition engine running or not....And come on you shouldn't strap a child in with the engine running without someone looking after the controls of the car....That is common sense for a whole lot different reasons opposed to having a chance to get locked out when you press the lock button...

I can imagine it is annoying when it happened, but I'd like my car to lock when I press the button...

One of the beauties of the intelligent key on the Pathfinder is that you can't lock the doors with the key inside it just won't lock. I found this out because I was out with my daughter and she had her keys in her coat which she threw on the back seat, when we got out and I tried to lock the car it just beeped and wouldn't lock, cue lots of swearing and cursing wondering what was up and then after 10 mins it struck me that her keys were in the car, once removed the doors locked no problem.

Does the lock button from inside the cabin work? After two attempted car jacks in Barcelona I always drive with my doors closed....I wouldn't want not being able to lock my doors...Just like what I like to do is get my car running when it was icy, then lock it with my spare key and have my breakfast :)

Maybe I'm being daft, but why in the world would you press the lock button if you *don't* want your doors to lock? No matter if the doors click or don't click - if you don't press the lock button, the doors won't lock, right? I'm sorry, but I agree with Nissan - to me this is expected behaviour.

He acidently caught the lock button and then started the car then closed the door, locking his keys inside. That above discribtion is what he had to do to recrete what happened, to find out why it locked his keys in the car.....

Ah, ok. That makes sense.

I have always been really wary of something like that happening so usually look at the doors to make sure they're unlocked after starting the car and before slamming the door shut to start scraping ice.

This winter I've only used spray-on de-icer. Much quicker and no ugly scraping on my precious glass. :partycheer:

Design flaw by accident I would say since, surely, nobody deliberately programmed the car to behave in this way. Nissan won't own up to this or remedy it unless a serious number of owners were to complain cos it will cost them money. So its down to owners being careful - great if you're forwarned as is anyone using this forum - not so great if you're not a forum member - but maybe that serves you right in that case

Thanks again for your input.

I have tried to re-create the same situation with other makes of car, inc Hyundai I30, Ford Mondeo, Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Corsa, Mazda 2

All of these automatically unlocked all doors either when the key is placed in the ignition or when the ignition is turned on. None of these cars will lock you out.

Yup if you are inside and push that button the doors will lock
