I might try putting a little torch in front of the sensor. Where is it? Or is there a fuse I can pull?

There are two light sensors. They're either end of the vent on the dash. 2p sized circles.

You could pull the fuse or unplug the headlight bulbs if it is a one off. For a more permanent solution a switch to interrupt the circuit wouldn't be difficult.

I didn't know Australian indicator switches were on the other side, I assumed they were the same as everybody else with some right and some left.

not sure if this will work but on some Renaults this is the procedure

If you want to deactivate them completely, turn the ignition on (not the engine), and flick the light switch from zero to sidelights then back to zero again - TWICE QUICKLY. You should here a beep to tell you it's worked. The lights will now never come on automatically.

Or you need to click and hold the AUTO button on the end of the indicator stalk with just the ignition on. A message will come up on the dash - AUTO LIGHTS DE-ACTIVATED.

dunno if it will work but many ECUs etc are common these days

Ours are on the right - are yours not?

My wife's VW has them on the left. This means half the time when someone cuts me off I furiously wash my windscreen at them, and the other half if something shits on my windscreen I give the car in front an outraged dose of high beam.

can be either but most cars have them on the left of the wheel for indicating right hand for wipers however the Merc I sometimes use has the whole damn lot on the left most annoying

I occasionally have to drive a Mercedes Sprinter at work. The lights have so many settings that setting out requires a ten-minute prebrief in the car park.

Do you happen to know where the fuse is for the lights? I pulled every fuse in the panel behind the glove box and none worked. It made the keyless entry system go haywire for a couple of days though.

Yeah would be nice to know how to deactivate the auto head lights. Some times I wait in the car to pick my wife and I don't want the headlights blarring at the neighbors and oncoming traffic.

then pop the switch to sidelights it should over ride the factory settings, just a thought the new navs have DRLs could the lack of a switch be due to the fact its now law that all new vehicles always have a front light displayed whilst in use hence the reason the Aussies have a alternate setup not sure if Aus models have DRLs.

Wouldnt mind betting the lights come on in place of the DRLs if they fail

Although you are contravening section 42 of the road traffic act by unnecessary idling. There is a fixed penalty for this.

Just put this to the test (even though I don't want to deactivate mine), and it doesn't work.

We have DRLs on the LED headlight models (top two variants). There is still an "off" position (as there is on the remaining 26 variants which all have halogen lights).

The DRLs remain illuminated with the light switch set to "off".
