Um, I have been experiencing a severe clunk in transmission when changing from 1st to 2nd no matter how careful I take it. I have gotten to the point of having to double declutch to solve the issue. I assumed this was normal and just naff gearbox design but reading this I am thinking it is an actual fault? (I have manual 6 speed)

I have checked propshaft and can't feel any play in the joints so don't think it is prop. My thought is gearbox itself :-(

Warranty conversation is needed with a dealer!

Sounds like a clutch not properly freeing up to me, but could still be propshaft or diff.

Or if you get similar between 3&4 and 5&6 then that could be a gearbox shaft issue, or synchromesh.

Might be as simple as a loose exhaust or bit of heat shield....

i would say an engine mount possibly, had similar with my ZTT V8 was horrid lift of and clunk the engine moved and shocked through the drive train took a while to find it as we looked at proshafts centre bearings etc in the end it was a little rubber mount that had perished due to exhaust heat especially so as auto and manual seem to have a similar issue, both engines i assume have the same mounts

Thanks guys. Only happens 1st to 2nd, all other changes are clunk free no matter how hard and quick the change. I'll get dealer to take a look. It is difficult sometimes to know if something is a fault or just a feature of design unless you can compare two or more trucks side by side. Thx to all.

so another two weeks with the loan of a brand new 2017 NP300 whilst my 2016 Model is still being considered for a new engine... further observations are:-

  • Engine is so much smoother and has almost no rattle compared to my 2016 model, quieter as a result, even on tick over.
  • Windows already been commented on but the windows are fine in this one but slow as anything in my 2016
  • Ride does seem a little less harsh
  • Sorry to go on, but brilliant to have a temp guage again!
  • not checked/noticed the MPG yet, will monitor and post up again...

Very interesting.... So how did you kill yours again? Might need some tips... :)

That's the thing I am still trying to find out!?! I don't tow anything, I don't really carry any loads, 90%+ of the time the bed is completely empty. It has been regularly serviced, all the levels are in the green and regularly checked, I'm not the slowest driver in the world but not done anything to put strain on the engine??

As soon as I have the feedback/report from Nissan I will share...

I very much doubt you will be told the real reason they tend to keep things like that hidden. I find it incredible that there is any reluctance to ok a new lump in it. most manufacturers would want the old one back ASAP to check out the issue. Or are they considering a repair? You never know maybe the new truck may become permanent! Its not unheard of .I know of two ford rangers 3.2 with blown engines that are still sitting in the dealers after 12 months the owners were given new trucks even though both were around 30k miles.

at the moment Nissan have asked the local dealer to pull it apart and try to establish a better idea of what is wrong, I assume to establish if its a genuine warranty claim or if there has been any misuse?? Apparently once the tech has provided a report back to Nissan they are expected to approve the fitting of a new engine... If that's an available option I cant see them simply providing me with a replacement, although I was told that its a ÂŁ16k warranty claim. Maybe it would be cheaper to break the truck for parts and give me a new one??

See thats my thinking when you can buy a tekna new for around the 20k mark. I really dont see what misuse they could come up with as long as all the servicing and levels are correct. Im so pleased I very rarely have to deal with warranty on vehicles . If it was any of our farm equipment they would fit a new engine asap and then argue about it after.

I'm listening to mine very carefully now. End of the day 55JWB, 30k miles is a reasonable amount. I doubt many will be up to that yet, I've done 51k in mine now its got to be up there with one of the highest mileage NP300's around. If some issues are going to crop up I'd rather they did it now under the 100k mile warranty.

Twice today it sounded rough, the first I cant explain, the second Jesus I couldn't understand what the racket was until I realised it was a transit tipper that appeared to have weighed its own exhaust in on its last scrap yard run. What a din.

Was talking to a mechanic (non Nissan) today and he reckons loss of oil pressure causing little/top end to fail... then when Nissan called me to say when placing “ears” on engine noise coming from top of engine not bottom so mechanic was on the right lines... still waiting formal explanation from Nissan...

I did submit an update earlier today but it looks like it didn't post?

anyway, BIG UPDATE

I received a call from the service manager today who said that he had got Nissan technical UK involved with my warranty claim. The Tech guys placed what they called "Chassis Ears" on my Nav which are apparently small listening devices strategically placed on and around the vehicle. They "Nissan" have said that they believe that the knocking noise is coming from a combination of the rear body and the Auto gearbox. The body is to be re-tightened and the auto box is to be replaced but I was told to expect a long wait for the replacement box. In the meantime I have been advised to collect and drive my vehicle as normal as there is no increased risk of mechanical failure. I did ask about the tappet like noise coming from then engine when pushed to which he (the service manager) replied "that will be the injectors just doing there job and its really nothing to worry about" I replied that the Navara I am driving at the moment doesn't sound "tappety" he replied "its probably because it's different fuel system in the new ones" "but mine is new" I replied. Silence............................. Anyway, I will collect my vehicle and wait for the new auto box, and update once the box has been fitted.

I'd be telling Nissan that I don't want it back until it's fixed, and will keep the new one in the meantime.

At least get them to put in writing that they're telling you to keep on driving it just in case anything happens.

Sent from my mobile device. Please excuse brevity and mistakes.

I am just about to update my engine failure post, I would suggest you get the dealer to check the seating of the injectors and possibly even swap them from one cylinder to another and fully tighten them... my update in the other thread will explain why.

I do think you need to start making the case for rejection. At the very least make sure that the tapping noise issue is documented, noting that unless you have it in writing, the service manager will deny the "they all do that" comment.

So Nissan called me whilst I was on my way to collect the vehicle. Apparently its not now the gearbox itself but the torque converter. I also mentioned again the tappet like noise coming from the engine when under load and the tech said he would have a look at it and assured me that he has he best man on the job, and will do his up most to rectify the vehicle for me. What else can you say to that? I suppose I have lost a little faith and if I am being truthful to myself I did slightly regret opting for a NP300 (but only for a short while)

Then again, its a vehicle like any other and they go wrong, lots of them. my colleague has a new 3.0 Velar and LR can just cannot fix this thing, they have a dealership full of faulty ones and LR are not handing them back to their owners until the electrical problems are rectified. Then there was the brand spanking new S class merc I had the other day, gave it the full beans and it went into limp mode, thing lit up like a Christmas tree! now merc cannot seem to fix it.

I have to give Nissan the chance to fix this and I am hopeful they will and If I get it back I might just treat myself to a 2" lift using some very nice FOX parts if I can find them in the UK (they seem everywhere is OZ) and some totally unnecessary, over priced wheels and tyres that will ruin the handling and braking distances.

Getting back to the 2 NP300's very different vehicle's

mine has arrived back today, I have it for testing to make sure the rattle/knock has gone... so I still have two NP300's to compare and contrast with... mine being Euro5 the loan truck being Euro6

One thing I have noticed they both have issues with is the heating. 16.5' is melting my contact lenses, 16.0' is freezing cold! At least that is the same across both cars...

will see if my 2016 Euro5 is as quiet and smooth as the 2017 Euro6 I have been driving, if need be I can jump in each one over the next couple of days...

I've complained to my dealer about this a few times. They deny it's a problem or that it could even possibly be happening. Yet I seem to be far from the only Navara owner having the same problem.

Did you notice any difference in fuel economy between the EU5 and EU6 NP300?

Well my last update was that the head tech diagnosed the torque converter as the problem but the regular tech removing the auto box now says its the gearbox itself and has found excessive movement in the main shaft.

With regards to heating, for me the Nav is the hottest vehicle I have ever driven, windows are ajar most of the time regardless of weather.
