Hi. My battery light on my 2003 D22 is flickering on and off constantly
while driving and even when sitting at idle. Am I right in thinking this
is a bad earth? If so where do I start? Already checked the connections
to the battery itself and they seem fine.

Could be a bad earth, loose connection maybe?, make sure the plug in the back of the alternator is secure and the terminals are clean, check the battery earth lead both ends too, could also be an early sign of a dodgy alternator

Had the nav in the garage to check the alternator and it's putting out too much voltage.
Better change it before it cooks the battery.
Think i'll have to look for a good used one as the part alone is ÂŁ295 + VAT.

Too much?
What was it pushing?
Don't know Rob as the poster didn't say but he had black smoke and poor performance :(
After a lengthy investigation he discovered an over charging alternator with burnt wiring  causing the problems
