Hi there, went to go to work one morning turned car over two or three times, battery went dead, jump started no problems, this has happened on four more occassions now. The last time i got a mechanic to jump start me, he took a reading off of the battery and it was over 14v, went to turn her over it dropped rapidly to about 9 -dead. Jumped the truck reading stayed at about 14+v, turned everything on, hazards, lights, fan, readings all over the place, tgurned everything off, back to about 14v again. Turned engine off slight drain on the volt meter, mechanic sems to think it's draining back through alternator, does this mean alternator on its way out. I'm a bit nervous now driving with lights and fan on and then turning engine off in case it fails to start again. Battery is a year old and sems to be charging when the engine is running and nothing else is on, also i've been told rightly or wrongly that the truck should have a dry cell battery fitted? before an expensive garage trip any advice or thoughts would be most welcome

I had the same problem and it's happened to a few of us this winter. You battery is being drained by the starter motor. You will find over a period of time (months) the car is harder to start.

It could be something else but this has happened to a few of us.

Easiest way to check wether its the aternator or starter causing the drain is make sure the battery is fully charged then disconnect the alternator overnight. If the battery still drains suspect the starter.

Charge the battery up again and disconnect the starter overnight, if the battery is ok in the morning the starters your problem. If the battery is still losing power have the battery checked again.

Good luck

Hi
I had just the same problem with my 03 plate D22. it would not start on a monday morning after no use over a long weekend.
I recharged the battery and connected a volt meter between the pos terminal and the pos battery lead i got a reading of 0.08amps with the ignition and everything else turned off, i thought this was something and nothing putting it down to radio memory and the NATS system.
I fitted a new battery but the fault persisted, on the fouth investigation i re connected the voltmeter and pulled the fuses one by one keeping a watch on the meter.
When i pulled the radio fuse the reading dropped to 0.00 zero, i found i had wired the radio not using an ignition live.
Since using an ignition live the motor starts every time for the last six months, i dont know why this problem croped up as i fitted the radio just after i bought the vehicle, ive had it from new.
Try connecting a multimeter and pull fuses see what turns up.
